The Social Round

Mrs J. C. Kirkland, Kelvin street, is visiting Dunedin. Mrs A. 0. Davies, Dee street, is spending a week in Dunedin. Mrs F. W. Dunlop, South Hillend, with her small son, is visiting her mother, Mrs J. G. Macdonald, Don street.
Mrs W. S. Allan, Christchurch, who is visiting her mother, Mrs R. M. Strang, Lewis street, will return north on Thursday. Mr and Mrs C. E. Just, Duke street, will leave next week-end to reside in Dunedin. Their house will be occupied by Mr and Mrs M. O’Dowda.
Miss Mary Nichol, Clifton, was hostess on Saturday afternoon in honour of Miss June Carswell and Miss Nancy Just, who are leaving Invercargill soon. There was a good attendance at Gladstone yesterday afternoon when a meeting was held to form a sub-com-mittee of the Red Cross Society. Mrs T. F. Gilkison presided. The following officers were appointed: Chairman, Mis T. F. Gilkison; secretary, Mrs J. E. Cuthill; committee, Mesdames K, H. Smyth, S. Bell, R. P. Fish, C. WhiteParsons, P. L. Hodge and W. J. Jones. The work of collecting clothing for refugees and arranging for V.A.D.’s is proceeding. Mrs T. A. Clark, Ythan street, will leave tomorrow for Wellington where she will be the guest of Mrs W. M. B. Veitch. Mrs Clark is going north to meet her sister, Mrs E. R. Stephens and her small daughter on their arrival
from England. Mr and Mrs Stephens, who formerly lived in Invercargill, have resided in England for the past five years. While her husband is in Egypt with the anti-tank unit of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Mrs Stephens has decided to visit her former home.
Mrs C. F. A. Jones, Eamslaw street, has received advice from her sister, Mrs J. Jamie, that Mrs Jamie and her husband have booked passages from England to New Zealand, where they will reside. Mrs Jamie is the elder daughter of the late Mr and Mrs P. L. Gilkison, of Invercargill, and Mr Jamie, who was at one time accountant in the Invercargill branch of the Union Bank, left Invercargill 24 years ago to join the staff of the Royal Bank of Australia. Sixteen years ago he was transferred to England when the Royal Bank merged with the English, Scottish and Australian Bank of which he became assistant manager in London. Since retiring in 1936, Mr and Mrs Jamie have lived in Scotland.
