WOMEN’S DIVISION

GROVE BUSH.— The monthly meeting of the Grove Bush branch was held in the hall when Mrs Coveney presided over a good attendance of members. Tire president gave a report on the annual meeting of the Southland executive. Different methods to raise funds for patriotic purposes were discussed and it was decided to have a patriotic sales table at each meeting. Competition winners were:—Best bloom: Mrs Bonniface 1, Miss J. Coveney 2, Mrs Warden 3. Jumbles: Mrs Cooper 1, Mrs Walsh 2, Miss J. Coveney 3. Worked cushion: Miss J. Coveney 1, Mrs McCallum and Mrs Coveney 2 equal, Mrs Warden and Mrs Knight 3 equal. Mrs Walsh, the secretary, handed in her resignation as she was leaving the district and Mrs A. Knight was unanimously elected to fill the vacancy.

MAKAREWA. — There was a large attendance of members of the Makarewa branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union at the monthly meeting. Mrs McClean presided. Competitions resulted:—Best bloom, Mrs Kidd 1. Health biscuits, Mrs Cooper 1, Mrs Hermann 2, Mrs Gill 3. It was decided to begin the first aid classes as soon as possible. Invitations were received from Wrights Bush, Rimu, Myross Bush and Kennington institutes to their birthday celebrations. Mrs Gill gave an interesting demonstration on smocking. The hostesses were Mesdames Henry and Hormann.

HEDGEHOPE.— At the monthly meeting of the Women’s Division Mrs Blackler presided over a good attendance of members. The branch had decided at the last meeting to apply for wool to knit for the soldiers. This was on hand and was distributed to the members who were willing to do the knitting. Mrs Jukes gave a very interesting demonstration on making rag rugs. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The roll call “A good cheese dish,” met with a good response and some good recipies were exchanged.

WAIMATUKU.— At the monthly meeting of the Waimatuku branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs A. Mathieson presided over an attendance of 20 members. An invitation was received from the Wrights Bush branch to attend its birthday on June 26. Reports of the executive meeting were given by Mrs Evans, Miss Pinckney and Mrs Hayes. It was decided to hold a euchre party and dance on June 20 to raise funds. Competitions resulted:—Best bloom, Mrs Shearer 1, Miss M. Anderson 2, Mrs Hayes 3. Best bottle of melon jam: Mrs Hayes 1, Mrs Rance 2, Mrs W. Buchanan 3. An article to be made from not more than two sugar bags, Miss M. Anderson 1, Mrs Rance 2, Mrs Hayes 3.
