BALFOUR BEATEN AT GORE
WIN FOR ALBION EVENLY-CONTESTED GAME AT SHOW GROUND Albion beat Balfour by six points (a penalty goal and an unconverted try) to three (an unconverted try) in an Eastern Southland senior Rugby football competition match played at the Gore show ground on Saturday afternoon. Albion secured an early lead and was successful in holding it throughout. The teams were:— ALBION: McDougall, Langham, Milne, Smith, Latham, Wallis, Stephens. Petrie, Gentle, McCann, Smith, G. Herron, Stewart, McElhinney, McKinnell. BALFOUR: Gillespie, Shallard, Lamb, McLean, Hickey, W. Stewart, A. Stewart, Mulqueen (2), D. Gillespie, Pringle, R. Gillespie, Higgins, Herron, McGregor. Albion attacked from the kick-off and after a few minutes of play McKinnell opened his side’s score with a penalty goal from a fairly handy position. Albion 3, Balfour 0. Latham put his side on the attack again with a well-placed punt down the centre of the field, the Albion forwards following through quickly and pressing to Balfour’s 25. Balfour defended strongly for a period and its back eventually broke away in a good movement which transferred play .to Albion’s 25. Balfour was now attacking strongly and its backs again made a determined effort, a passing movement which started at one corner ending in McLean just failing to score in the other corner. He knocked over the corner flag as he grounded the ball. Half-time sounded with the scores:

Play centred at mid-field for a period after the interval. Albion returned to the attack and another penalty relieved for Balfour. McKinnell had an attempt at goal when Balfour was penalized about 15 yards outside its own 25 line, but the ball fell short of the posts. W. Stewart made an opening and sent his backs away in a good movement which almost resulted in a try. McLean, who was last to handle, was held up just short of the line. Albion was penalized and Higgins missed with a shot at goal. Soon after Stephens made a smart break away for Albion and after making a good run of about 30 yards, he handed to Langham, who scored in the corner. McKinnell’s kick missed. Albion 6, Balfour 0. Balfour made a determined effort before the end of the game and the Stewart brothers combined in a smart movement which resulted in W. Stewart scoring a good try well i out. Higgins missed with the kick. The final score was: Albion 6, Balfour 3. Mr G. Henry was the referee.
