ARMING WOMEN
To The Editor
Sir, —Must New Zealand be forever a home for defenceless women, as France is today? Had the women of France been equipped with rifles and ammunition, they would have had at least some opportunity of defending themselves and their children. That would have given them a chance to die fighting rather than be mown down and killed in cold blood. What hope would we have in the event of an invasion?
“Old Soldier” has stated the case very well, but he has not gone far enough. The women and children must be protected and why could not every able-bodied woman and civilian be allowed to carry a rifle and bayonet to aid the few men left to protect this country, and to give ourselves some sense of security.—Yours, etc., PRO PATRIA. June 23, 1940. “PEACE NEWS.” To The Editor Sir, —I look in vain in our Athenaeum for communist newspapers and pamphlets, but I see what is far worse, namely, “Peace News.”—Yours, etc., J. P. DAKIN. June 22, 1940.
