BASKETBALL
GOOD DISPLAYS IN SENIOR GRADE COMPETITIONS CONTINUED The Southland Basketball Union s weekly competitions were continued at the Duke street courts on Saturday afternoon in favourable conditions. There were some good displays in the senior grade and most of the games were fairly evenly contested. CONVINCING WIN FOR RATA SOUND PERFORMANCE BY HIGH SCHOOL The High School team put up a good display against Rata, particularly in the first half. The Rata players had an advantage in height and experience, but their opponents were not disfnayea by this and gave a sound performance in the Circumstances. The High School centres -succeeded in giving the attacks a number of good opportunities in the first half, but the attacks did not seem able to make full use of these opportunities, possibly because they were
fielding an emergency in this third. Rata had things more its own way in the second half. The team’s centres, A. Pittaway, Z. Smith and V. Fraser, were on their game and the attacks had a plentiful supply of the ball. The Rata defences played a solid game and they made the task of the High School girls a difficult one. A bright match ended with the scores: Rata 21, High School 7. ST. MARY’S BEATEN IN KEEN GAME Stuart’s and St. Mary’s had a keen encounter. The scores were very close practically throughout the match, but near the end Stuart’s gained the upper hand. Stuart’s made a promising start and as a result of some open and accurate basketball ran up a three-goal lead. For the rest of the half St. Mary’s made every endeavour to draw level and succeeded in reducing the deficit to two, the scores at half-time being 8-6 in- favour of Stuart’s. St. Mary’s made some determined sorties on the resumption of play and evened the scores. There was little difference between the teams until near the end of the game when Stuart’s drew rapidly ahead. The Stuart’s centres were shading their opponents and consequently the attacks had many more chances at goal. With the attacks shooting consistently, the team gained a comfortable lead. The final scores were: Stuart’s 19, St. Mary’s 13.
TECHNICAL’S SUCCESS The play of the McKenzie’s team is now much improved and on Saturday the team would probably have beaten Technical had it not been playing one short in the centre third. However, the Technical centres by no means had things their own way and the McKenzie’s attacks got a fair share of the ball. The Technical defences were responsible for a good effort and played a big part in the team’s success. B. White played an accurate game in McKenzie’s attack third and scored some very fine goals. The final scores were 13-10 in favour of Technical. COLLEGIATE SUPERIOR Collegiate beat Makarewa by 19 goals to 9. Collegiate was definitely superior, but at the same time the Makarewa girls made a good showing. The Collegiate- attacks were on their game and scored consistently. SECOND GRADE Pirates 21 beat Collegiate 11. Wallacetown 33 beat Technical 9. \ Woolworth’s 25 beat St. Mary’s 13. Makarewa 19 beat Rata 10. THIRD GRADE Stuart’s 11 drew with Collegiate 11. Kennington 18 beat Bluff 11. Woodlands 16 beat Rata 6.
St. Mary’s 17 beat Pirates 11. Makarewa 30 beat Collegiate B 4. FOURTH GRADE Bluff B 15 beat McKenzie’s 9. Makarewa 15 beat Bluff A 9. St. Mary’s 8 beat Kennington 5.
