WOMEN’S HOCKEY

GAMES CONTINUED ON SATURDAY EX-HIGH BEATEN BY COLLEGIATE The weather was fine on Saturday for the continuation of the Southland Women’s Hockey Asociation’s competition. The ground was not in a good state and the surface was slippery. The game between Invercargill and Technical was one-sided but the young Technical players acquitted themselves well although they lacked effective combination. Invercargill won by 10 goals to nil. The second game was far more interesting, a hard duel resulting between Collegiate and Ex-High. Collegiate was the winner by 4 goals to one.

INVERCARGILL BEATS TECHNICAL, The Invercargill team proved far superior to Technical. M. Kelly again played well for Invercargill. Her defence is very reliable. Technical, in spite of the large score compiled against it, executed some fine penetrations and more than once had the Invercargill team bustled. The Technical goal-keeper (M. Anderson) made some brilliant saves and O. Hemmings, R. Watson and H. Newlands were in good form. The te; were:— TECHNICAL.—M. Anderson, H. Newlands, B. Greer, J. MacGregor, L. McDermott, O. Kimble, R. Watson, N. Peacock, O. Hemmings, R. Brosnan, D. Widdcwso:.. INVERCARGILL—L. Cook, F. Foulston, M. Kelly, P. Hall, H. Sandri, M. Elliotte, P. Hemmings, M. Howie, F. Watt, E. F d war ds. From the start Invercargill began the attack and hemmed Technical in its territory, but the Technical forwards managed to clear to mid-field where a scuffle took place. H. Newlands (Technical) made some excellent saves and it was by her well-timed shots that the opposing team did not score more goals. R. Watson (Technical) made a good run and penetrated the defences but the offensive collapsed through lack of support. Invercargill continued its attack and goaled a few moments later. It kept up the pressure and had another attempt at goal but M. Anderson saved splendidly. However, Invercargill scored twice more before halftime. Invercargill continued its scoring tactics in the second half and goals came regularly. Play at times was fairly even but on the whole Technical was outclassed. Messrs H. Kelly and H. E. Perrin were the umpires. GOOD WIN FOR COLLEGIATE The game between Collegiate and Ex-High was responsible for a bright display of hockey. Play was very even in the opening stages until D. Gray goaled twice for Collegiate, after making good runs. A. Shaw, who combined very well with D. Gray, penetrated but she missed with an easy shot. After some time Ex-High took a hand and made an attack which resulted in a goal. Just before half-time A. Shaw again made a dashing run which culminated in a fine goal. The second half was fairly even and some hard play was seen. When the final whistle blew Collegiate had added another goal to its total, and the scores were: Collegiate 4, Ex-High 1. The teams were:— COLLEGIATE.—A. Bateman, I. Hunter, E. Blackie, P. Millard, M. McLeod, O. Butler, L. McDonald, A. Shaw, D. Gray, N. Wylie. EX-HIGH.—F. Monk, E. Fox, A. Anderson, L. Fraser, H. Hansen, M. Ford, H. Monk, M. Woods, L. Purvis, S. Monk, J. Wallace. The goals for Collegiate were scored by D. Gray (2), A. Shaw (2), and for Collegiate, H. Monk (1). Messrs H. Kelly and L. Holmes were the umpires. EASTERN SOUTHLAND COMPETITION Ideal weather prevailed for the continuation of the Eastern Southland women’s hockey competition matches on Saturday afternoon. At Waikaka, Hokonui scored an easy win over the home side by eight goals to nil. The visitors obtained an early lead and the Waikaka side was kept on the defensive for the greater part of the game. Led by M. Mattingly the Hokonui forwards played sound hockey and combined in many bright movements. Goals were scored for the winners by M. Mattingly (6) and J. Ryan (2).
