In the News

Triplets Three healthy boys of good weight were born to Mrs Barrow, wife of Mr C. Barrow, of Venus street, Invercargill, on Friday at the St. Helen’s Hospital. The mother and babies are quite well. This is an unusual event, although triplets were born at the hospital 17 months ago. Topical Names That music composers are moving with the times is evident from the number of titles of marches and other compositions bearing names connected with the war. One of these entitled “War Correspondents’ March” was played by the orchestra of the Invercargill Orphans’ Club at its meeting on Saturday. National Military Reserve An explanation of the reorganization of Class II of the National Military Reserve was given by Major H. C. Mackenzie at the annual meeting of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association on Saturday. Me said several companies would be formed in the South Island for returned soldiers a total of 150 returned soldiers being required in Invercargill for training for home defence. They would be required to pass a medical examination to home defence standard. The reserve would be issued with uniforms, rifles and bayonets. The men would be required to perform the equivalent of 40 days’ training each year. Returned soldiers would be advised when arrangements were complete to establish the reserve. Women Tram Conductors A recent passing reference by the Wellington tramways manager to the possibility that young women might have to be employed as tram conductors if the demand for man power for war purposes was extended, continues to interest a section of the community. Inquiries are being made every day by telephone and by letter for conditions of employment as conductors by women who are prepared to undertake this work right away. Some have written asking that forms of application be forwarded, so that they can take the earliest opportunity of undergoing instruction in preparation for the new duties.
