MEN’S HOCKEY

INTERESTING GAMES ON SATURDAY SENIOR MATCHES CAUSE SURPRISES Interesting matches were seen at Queen’s Park on Saturday afternoon when the men’s hockey competition was carried a stage further, Central scoring an unexpected win over Collegiate and the new Old Boys team holding Civil Service to a draw with each side securing two points. Trie grounds were in fair order and the weather was ideal. WIN FOR CENTRAL' After its recent lapse of form it was not expected that Central would beat the excellent combination of the Collegiate eleven, but such proved to be the case. Central was a different team, in effect, from that which had been seen in the past few weeks and was always a shade superior than Collegiate. A good, hard game resulted in a win for Central by two goals to nil. The game opened brightly and both teams attacked aggressively and defended solidly. Central scored its first goal from a melee in front of Collegiate’s goal-mouth when Semmens drove the ball into the net. after Collegiate had cleared several times. There was no further score in the first half although the game continued at a fast pace and loth sides had their share of the ball. Central played with more dash in the second half and Semmens scored Central’s second goal from close in. There were some bright and interesting movements before the final whistle sounded. The teams were: CENTRAL.—P. Cooke, Taylor, Jones, F. Farley, W. Semmens, W. Lowe, A. Osman, B. Gunn, T. Hennessey, I. Speirs, E. Keim an. COLLEGIATE: N. Poole, N. Speirs, C. Martin, V. McMillan, M. Richards, S. Hunt, G. Davidson, L. Mason, J. Melrose, D. Davidson, J. Waddell. Messrs H. E. Perrin and W. Purvis were the umpires. EVENLY-CONTESTED GAME The game between Old Boys and Civil Service was evenly contested from start to finish. Old Boys played its best game to date and created a surprise by holding the more experienced Civil Service team to a draw, and with so low a score. Its combination was greatly improved and its sound defence held the Civil Service attackers at bay for most of the game. Civil Service did not have the support of all its regular members and failed to strike its usual form. Hardcastle scored for Civil Service in the first half and after the interval Dawson brought its score to two. Wilson equalized with two good goals for Old Boys and although Civil Service tried gamely to increase its score in the final stages the game ended without any addition being made to the scores. Messrs F. Hinton and G. Hope were the referees.

INTERMEDIATE GRADE Central beat Technical College by six goals to one. High School beat Collegiate by three goals to one. JUNIOR COMPETITION Technical College A beat High School B by seven goals to nil. High School A beat Technical College B by seven goals to one. EASTERN-NORTHERN MATCHES GORE A BEATS GORE B Only one. Eastern-Northern men’s hockey competition match was played at Gore on Saturday afternoon, that being between Gore A and Gore B. The High School A-High School B match was not played and the other match between Waipounamu and Otama was played at Otama. In a very evenly contested game at the hostel grounds, Gore A beat Gore B by six goals to two. The B team was not at full strength, taking the field with nine players, but it managed to

hold the A team until about 10 minutes before the end of the game, the score up to then being two goals all. Playing with great dash the A side scored four goals in the last 10 minutes of play. Jones, the B team goal-keeper, played an outstanding game, effecting many saves. Goals for the A team were scored by Ferris (3), Day (2) and Anderson. Adair and Turnbull scored for the B team.
