TWO TOP TEAMS BEATEN
OLD BOYS OUTPLAY MARIST BLUFF BEATEN BY INVERCARGILL STAB AND PIRATES DRAW The defeat of two of the unbeaten teams in the Galbraith Shield competition, the general excellence of the back play of the Old Boys’ team and the improved showing the Star team were features of the fifth series of games in the Galbraith Shield competition on Saturday afternoon. Marist and Bluff suffered their first loss in the championship, Old Boys beating Marist pointlessly and Invercargill beating Bluff at Bluff after a hard and evenlycontested game. Star and Pirates drew, the former playing its best football this season.
. Old Boys was strengthened by the inclusion of 2nd Lieutenant A. W. Wesney, who was in Invercargill on leave from Burnham camp. Wesney gave the younger backs of the team much confidence and the result was an effective combination which at times out-classed the well-performed Marist team. Wesney scored 12 of Old Boys’ 24 points; he kicked four goals (three conversions and a penalty) and scored a try. Conditions at Rugby Park were good and generally the brightest of football was played. The results were: Old Boys 24, Marist 0. Invercargill 6, Bluff 3. Pirates 11, Star 11.
