ABOLITION OF RIVER DISTRICT
MINISTER PETITIONED BY BOARD Notice of the proposed abolition of the Makarewa-Hedgehope River District is contained in the latest issue of the Gazette. Although the board controlling the district has been in existence officially since about 1882, it has not functioned for some /ears and the comparatively small area of the district has been under the jurisdiction of the Southland County Council. The board when it was last elected comprised Messrs P. Adamson (chairman),H. Horton, T. A. Fleming and A. and N. Mclntyre. Some time ago it was realized that the board served no useful purpose and it was decided to draw un a petition to th Minister of Internal Affairs proposing the abolition of the board. This was circulated among the 23 ratepayers in the board’s district and sent to Wellington about a fortnight ago.
