REINSTATEMENT OF 48-HOUR WEEK
MOTION FROM WALLACE COUNTY SUPPORTED (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 14. Demands for increased wages and new conditons’ covering local body drivers came before the Makara County Council today. The chairman (Mr Windley) said it seemed evident that some increase in wages would be granted. There had already been an increase for general labourers. He could not understand it because he felt that in the existing conditions it was unwarranted. The Government had the power to suspend the powers of the Court of Arbitration and he thought this was desirable under war conditions. From the local body point of view every increase had to be passed on to the ratepayers. The opinion was expressed that while other sections of the community were bearing their share of the war effort certain unions were making unjustifiable demands on industry, and support was given to the Wallace County Council’s resolution asking for reinstatement of the 48-hour week without an increase in the weekly Wages and with a 50 per cent, reduction in holidays, and overtime at the ordinary rates of pay.
