WAIMATUKU RABBIT BOARD

At a meeting of the Waimatuku Rabbit Board the chairman, Mr lan Fraser, mentioned that since the beginning of operations 15 months previously extending over an area of 28,000 acres, some 13,500 rabbits had been trapped, while it was not possible to estimate the number that had been destroyed by fumigating operations and dogs. The whole area had been trapped and fumigated, with the result that rabbits were now scarce in places where they had been plentiful before the board took over. As a result of the board’s activites, the district must benefit considerably, because of the large amount of feed saved. It could be estimated that seven rabbits eat oi' waste as much grass as would support one sheep, and the increase in the carrying capacity of the district was important in these days when it was essential for New Zealand to increase its production as much as possible. Ratepayers realize that the only satisfactory method of dealing with the rabbit pest was by means of a board, and the board had appreciated the support it had received from ratepayers.
