MAN SENT TO PRISON FOR THEFT
SOCIAL SECURITY MONEY STOLEN (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 13. The theft of money totalling £3/10/paid in as Social Security contributions was charged against Reginald Albert Lee, employed by the Land and Income Tax Department. The accused, who is aged 46, admitted the offence and was sentenced to one month’s hard labour.
He had worked for five and a-half years without a mark against him, it was stated, but up till a month ago had handled no money. Tire thefts were perpetrated in mail sorting. There were others employed in the office, and the Magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout) remarked that suspicion had also been thrown on other people. It was money that had been paid in to the department and the people concerned had no proof that they had paid it and might be called upon to pay again.
