RACING AND TROTTING

OFFER MADE FOR NORSEMAN

Southland Sires Well Placed

SPECIAL FORCE NOT

IN DERBY

Weights for the Ashburton County meeting are due tomorrow.

Nominations for the Wellington Club’s winter meeting close today.

Entries for practically all classic events in New Zealand close today.

A Change Millisle is to be transferred to J. Young’s stable.

Gold Bank's Marks

Gold Bank is now assessed on 2.14 (one mile), 2.48 (1} miles) and 4.32 (two miles).

Qualifying The Balboa gelding, Bilbao, is to be qualified with the Birchwood Hounds.

A Big Team L. A. Maidens, who resumed training a few months back, has now 33 horses under his care.

The Half-Hopple It is almost certain that the remit suggesting the use of the half-hopple will be carried.

Unlucky Clive Brook did not win a race during the season, but he was seven times second and twice third. Will Be Improved

The racing he had last week will see Araboa a greatly improved horse when next produced.

Owned In Wellington Cherokee is owned by Mr B. L. Hammond, of Wellington, who is well known as the treasurer of all art unions run in New Zealand. No Business After Norseman’s win at Wingatui, his owner was asked to put a price on the Valkyrian gelding, but the figure quoted did not lead to business. Not In Derby Special Force, who is the outstanding two-year-old pacer so far produced this season, is not engaged in the New Zealand Derby. Southland Two-Year-Olds Noko (Sir Simper-Dark Marie) and Wild Coon (Nigger Minstrel-Miss Redowa) are two Southland two-year-olds engaged at the Ashburton meeting. Reply To Correspondent “E.C.,” Gore.—Logan Fraser was got by Logan Pointer from Jessie Fraser, by Rothschild from Clarewood (5.56), by Wildwood from Lady Clare, by Prince Imperial. Southland Pair Until R. E. McLellan goes to Riccarton to supervise the training of Wild Coon and Cintilla, the pair will be in charge of C. G, Humphries, a former | Southlander. i Should Improve On Foxton form Red Shoes looked an early' winner, but she failed at Napier, and again on Saturday. She should improve, being by Beau Pere from the English marc Rapide, dam of Speed and Top Flight.

A Novice [ Sir Frederick, by Night Raid from j Waving Corn, is among the latest to be given a course of hurdling at Riccarton.; He is inclined to rush his fences, but i gives the impression that he will make good with some experience. From Battleflag The three-year-old filly Flying Flag scored her second win in succession when she won the Clifton Hack Handicap at Hastings on Saturday. Flying Flag is a half-sister to a good steeplechaser Slayer and has some sound staying blood in her pedigree, being by Lord Warden from Battleflag, by Martian from Lady Kinloch, by Men-; schikoff. Survey Survey, who was one of the best ’chasers produced last winter, will not be raced this term. His trainer stated at Wingatui that when he was recommissioned earlier in the year Survey struck himself and as there was insufficient time to get him ready for the | Great Northern meeting it was decided to leave him out until next winter. All-Aged Stakes

In the five contests for the All-Aged Stakes, Gold Bank is the only horse of more than three years to win the race. When the race was instituted in 1936 the winner was Pot Luck, driven by M. Holmes. In 1937 M. B. Edwards was successful with Frisco Boy, and Horsepower (R. B. Berry) followed in 1938. Last year Nelson Eddy (D. McKcndry) won from Special Edition and Colonel Grattan.

Sires’ List Statistics compiled up to May 18

show Beau Pere with 58 winners and 76 place-getters for £24,145 in stakes to have a good lead. Southland sires well placed are: —

T. George’s Team T. George has shifted his active team from Trentham to Opaki for the balance of the winter. The majority of them are young horses that will be prepared for spring racing, but the team will comprise 21 in all, 18 of which are already at Opaki. The team comprises Beau Vite, Dungarvan, Galteemore, Dark Water, Batsham, Duncannon, Trench Law, Lady Montana, Foxbridge filly, Payroll, Lady Manua, Forsake, The Whipper, Beau Coureur, Defoe colt, Paravane, Beau Ciel, Tamakaha, Lord Quex filly, Kevin, and Orlein.

Dunedin Steeplechases The Dunedin Jockey Club transferred from Forbury to Wingatui in 1899, but it was 11 years later before a steeplechase was run on that course. It was included in the second day’s programme, and was styled the Wingatui Steeplechase. Mr A. S. Elworthy’s Wanganui won from St. Kooringa, the only other of four starters to complete the course. The Otago Steeplechase was founded in 1910, and was won by Honest Tom, owned by Mr M. Hanley, who has since been represented by Shillelagh Wood and Bally Brit.

Were They Correct? The time of lmin 11 2-ssec for the six-furlong hack at Hastings on Saturday seems extraordinarily good, and so does the lmin 19 4-ssec of Endorsement for six furlongs and a-half. The latter time is only l-ssec outside Gloaming’s track record in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, and is better than the time of any other winner of this race, which include such horses as Desert Gold, Sasanof, Affectation, The Hawk, Mireusonta, Glentruin, Gascony, Toxeuma, and Hunting Cry. A Busy Juvcnil

It is not often that a two-year-old is started 11 times, but this has been asked of 1 diamond Jim, and the reward |is one second placing. Diamond Jim I is owned by Mr G. R. Lancaster, and [ is by Jewel Pointer, one of the hardiest I little pacers raced in New Zealand. He | fairly thrived on hard, gruelling contests, and up to the present Diamond Jim does not seem to have been affected by his strenuous season. Another two-year-old by Jewel Pointer is Diamond Trust, whose only start was in the. Auckland two-year-old classic, which race he won narrowly from Diamond Jim. Broughton Still Leads There has been little change in the i leading positions on the jockeys’ ladder las the result of the racing at Hastings and Dunedin, but W. J. Broughton’s lead over B. H. Morris has been reduced to five as the result of two successes by the latter on Saturday. The leading apprentice rider, W. J. Mudford, retains his place as fourth. Details are as follows:—W. J. Broughton 53, B. H. Morris 48, H. N. Wiggins 44, W. J. Mudford 41, P. Spratt 39, P. Atkins 38, G. R. Tattersail 35, G. j Cameron 29, A. E. Ellis, C. T. Wilson I and R. W. McTavish 27, L. J. Ellis, A. Jenkins, and L. Dulieu 26, P. Burgess 25, W. Jenkins and T. Green 24, E. V. ; Dye 23, A. C. Messervy and S. Waddell j 22, C. G. Goulsbro 21, R. J. Mackie and I W. F. 'Ellis 20. Fine Pacing Sire Australia’s outstanding pacing sire, Globe Derby, has six representatives with mile records of 2min 4sec or faster, the list comprising Van Derby 2min 0 2-sscc, Walla Walla and Auburn Lad 2min 2 2-ssec, New Derby 2min 2Jsec, Evicus 2min 3sec and Logan Derby 2min 4sec, all records being made against time. Van Derby made his grass track record at Epsom and Auburn Lad returned his figures at Addington. New Derby, Evicus and Logan Derby established their records at Perth and Walla Walla in Sydney, while in New Zealand a few seasons ago Walla Walla made a race record of 2min 4 l-ssec, standing start. Van Derby, at Addington, took a mile and a-half record of 3min 9 3-ssec. Lawn Derby, lmin 59 2-ssec, is very closely related to Van Derby, both being from Roselawn. Robert Derby, sire of Lawn Derby, is a son of Globe Derby.

NEW DERBY WON BY POUTLEVEQUE LONDON, June 12. The New Derby, one and a-half miles, resulted: POUTLEVEQUE (S. Wragg) 1 TURKHAM (C. Smirke) 2 LIGHTHOUSE (R. Perryman) 3 Sixteen started. Won by three lengths, third a short head away.
