ATTACK DESCRIBED AS UNWARRANTED
INCREASE IN WAGES OF WATERSIDERS
(United Press Association)
WELLINGTON, June 13.
The president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr J. Flood, said that the attack made on the waterside workers by .the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) was unwarranted, particularly because the men for some weeks past had been working extended hours whenever they had been requested to do so by the Waterfront Control Commission.
There was no 40-hour week on the waterfront and there never had been, but the men offered theix- services from eight a.m. until 11 p.m. ox- midnight when necessary, and in many instances had worked long after midnight and had been back on the iob at eight a.m. “Surely Mr Hamilton will admit that these long hours are a contribution towards New Zealand’s war effort. The added increase in wages granted by the commission was purely an overdue wage adjustment,” added Mr Flood.
