RIGOROUS ECONOMICS NECESSARY

HIGHWAYS MAINTENANCE (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 4. Means of reducing expenditure, rather than recommendations for spending money, will probably be. the chief business of the annual meetings of the three Canterbury district highways councils which are to be held within the next fortnight. The Main Highways Board has informed local bodies that allocations for highways work will be reduced very considerably this year, and that rigorous economies will therefore have to be effected. The board aims at a reduction in expenditure by local bodies of 30 per cent, on last year’s figures, and it has circularized local bodies advising that only grants for maintenance, the completion of contracts, absolutely necessary bridging work and a limited amount of sealing can be expected this year. The board considers that the reduction of traffic resulting from many measures taken to conserve petrol will mean a saving of about 25 per cent, on the cost of highways maintenance.
