WINTER STRIKES SOUTHLAND

Light Snowfalls In Most Districts HEAVY COATING ON HILLS Winter struck Southland yesterday and reports from various centres indicate that a light fall of snow occurred throughout the province. Snow and sleet fell in Invercargill about 10 o’clock yesterday morning and several other falls occurred later in the morning and in the afternoon. The falls were heavier to the north of Waikiwi than in the city and in spite of the fair amount of traffic it carried, the North road remained white while the city streets soon lost their covering of snow. At Bluff yesterday the weather was bitterly cold in common with the rest of the province and several heavy showers of sleet occurred. At Lumsden there were intermittent falls of snow all day and the surrounding hills were thickly coated. As in the city, rain fell afterwards and there was no snow lying on the ground last evening. At Tuatapere there was a fairly heavy fall in the morning but the ground was clear last night. Showers of sleet fell throughout the day. There were many falls of snow at Nightcaps, a particularly heavy one occurring just before midday after which there was between two and three inches of snow on the ground. The hills surrounding Nightcaps carried a heavy coating. Little rain fell yesterday however. FALL AT MOSSBURN Several light showers of snow were experienced at Mossburn and a fairly heavy one occurred at about 8 o’clock in the evening. There was no sleet and little rain. At Waimahaka the fall was a light one. A heavy shower of hail occurred in the morning followed by a sprinkling of snow, but the weather generally , at Waimahaka was fine and cold. The hills surrounding the township carried a slight covering of snow. A number of falls occurred at Balfour throughout the day and there was an inch of snow on the ground early , in the evening when it was still snowing hard. Several heavy falls of snow occurred at Gore during the day and the ground was covered to a depth of about an inch last night. The weather showed no signs of clearing last night. There was two inches of snow on the ground at Glenaray yesterday morning but at Waikaia there was only a slight sprinkling. Several heavy falls occurred at Waikaia during the day, however and snow was still falling last night. Several heavy showers were also experienced at Riversdale yesterday.
