Rowle, Roxburgh, is the guests of Miss M. C. Rowley, Grey street. Mrs R. A. McCaughan, Roslyn Bush, has left to spend three weeks’ holiday in Waimate. Miss Hazel Stewart, “Dunalton,’ Wyndham, has returned from a holiday in the North Island. Mrs W. R. Creeser and her son Brent, Christchurch, are staying with Mrs R. Creeser, Avenal Flats, Dee street. There were eight tables of bridge at the weekly gathering of the Bridge Circle of the Southland Women’s Club on Monday night. Miss Lilian Tannock, whose marriage takes place in the near future, was the recipient of a cheque from the firm of Thomson and Beattie Ltd., with which she has been associated on the clerical staff for the past 10 years. The staff also made a presentation of a hand-beaten metal firescreen. About 80 members of the Southland Travel Club attended the social evening in H. and J. Smith’s tea rooms last night. The speaker for the evening, Miss Joyce Gilmour, was presented with a floral spray. Songs were contributed by Miss N. Brumby and Mr B. Kummert, and Mrs A. E. H. Bath was the accompanist. PLAY-READING AT WOMEN’S CLUB “BARBARA GROWS UP” “Barbara Grows Up,” by George Hamlen, was the play chosen by the Play-Reading Circle of the Southland Women’s Club for the gathering at the Women’s Club last night. Mrs T. F. Gilkison, chairman, welcomed the members, of whom there was a good attendance.

TENNIS DANCE AT PAPATOTARA PROCEEDS FOR PATRIOTIC FUND The fortnightly dance at Papatotara was well attended. The music was supplied by Mr R. Broomhall and extras by Mrs S. Walker and Miss O. Beer. FAREWELL SOCIAL AND DANCE
A large crowd of friends, representing employees of the New Zealand Railways and practically every sporting body in the district was present at a farewell social and dance held in the Boxing Gymnasium, Tuatapere, to bid farewell to Mr J. C. Beer and family. For the past 15 years, Mr Beer has been stationed at Tuatapere as an engine-driver and has now been transferred on promotion to Wellington. Many speakers said that Mr Beer had I been one of the most willing workers in all activities in the district. His fellowemployees referred to his capabilities in his particular job and the pleasant manner in which he had carried out his duties. Mr C. Chamberlain was chairman and spoke on behalf of the Waiau Anglers’ Club. Others who spoke were Messrs J. Curtin (stationmaster), H. Jackson, W. Blackie, Invercargill (district locomotive foreman), J. King (Tuatapere residents), A. McEwan (Boxing Club and Waiau Agricultural and Pastoral Association), D. O’Leary and C. Payne (Athletic Club), H. M. McDonald (football club), A. Rillstone and R. Owen (surrounding districts). From the railway employees, Mr Beer received a wallet containing a cheque and Misses Othley and Edith Beer were each given a leather hat box. The residents and combined sports bodies presented Mr Beer with a gold watch. ..Mr Beer replied on behalf of his daughters and himself. The evening was spent in dancing. Messrs A. Acker, H. Jackson, W. Aitken and A. D. McClymont gave songs with Mrs S. Walker and Miss W. Hannan as accompanists. Messrs W. Huggins and R. Owens gave an exhibition of club-swinging. Mr R. Broomhall supplied the music for the dance, for which Mr H. Stewart was master of ceremonies.
BASKETBALL DANCE SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION AT SPAR BUSH Another successful dance was held in the Spar Bush hall by the Basketball Club. Mr F. Smith, of Waimatuku, supplied the music and Mr J. WEDDING
DIXON-PATERSON The wedding took place at Mataura Presbyterian Church on April 27 of Evelyn Alexa Jane, second daughter of Mrs J. Fenton and the late Mr R. M. Paterson, of Methven, Canterbury, and Ronald Ernest youngest son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Dixon, Kana street. Mataura. The Rev. C. A. Kennedy, Mataura, performed the ceremony, and Mr Bowman, of Gore, played the wedding march. The church was decorated with bowls of pink and mauve Sweet peas and autumn foliage. Miss Pearl Patterson attended her sister as bridesmaid, and the bridegroom’s small cousin, Jean Butterfield (Bluff) was flower girl. Mr George Dixon was his cousin’s best man.
The bride, who was given away by her eldest brother, Mr Quested Paterson, wore a gown of coral pink duchess satin and Honiton lace, cut on Empire lines. The long tight-fitting sleeves finished with points over the wrist, and were trimmed with small satin buttons and loops. The heart-shaped neckline was finished with rows of small satin buttons and loops extending to below the waist-line. The skirt was cut with narrow panel with inset of lace falling into a full square train edged with lace. She wore a pink veil with a coronet of orange blossom, and silver shoes. She carried a sheaf of pink gladioli with pink and silver ribbon. The bridesmaid’s frock was of mauve georgette cut on the cross, the skirt having vandyked insets of lace. A small lace coatee with full puff sleeves was finished at the neck with a spray of pink and mauve flowers. She wore a coronet of mauve flowers, and silver shoes. Her bouquet of bronze chysanthemums had loops 'of silver and streamers of mauve ribbon. The flower girl wore an early Victorian frock of lemon net over satin scalloped with bands of yellow ribbon, the yoke trimmed with pink rosebuds and blue forget-me-nots. She wore a band of lemon flowers in her hair, and carried a posy of pink and mauve sweet peas with lemon daisies. She presented the bride with a silver horseshoe as she left the church. The reception was held at the home of the bridegroom’s parents, the guests being received by the bride’s mother assisted by the bridegroom’s mother. Mrs Fenton wore a clover woven costume, fox fur, and a black toque trimmed with clover quills and shoulder spray of pink roses and autumn leaves. Mrs Dixon wore a checked suit of brown with toning of red and lemon, brown felt hat trimmed to tone, fox fur and shoulder spray of pink roses and autumn leaves.
For travelling the bride wore a clover frock with navy hat and accessories.
The future home of Mr and Mrs R. E. Dixon will be at Mataura.
COUNTRY NEWS
OTAUTAU Miss May Ford, who has been visiting Mrs A. Robson, Opio Downs, Aparima, has returned to Christchurch. Mrs J. Hall spent the week-end in Dunedin. Mrs Cole, Nightcaps, was the guest of Mrs R. Brown for the week-end. Miss Gladys James, who has been staying for some months with her grandmother, Mrs A. Robson, Aparima, has returned to Invercargill. Misses Seatter, Mrs J. Kirk and Mr W. Seatter motored to Dunedin during the week-end to attend the winter show. Mr and Mrs J. T. Brooker and Mr and Mrs A. A. Liddell were in Invercargill on Saturday ‘for the KellyBrooker wedding. Mrs G. Patterson and her daughter Patricia, who have been spending a
holiday with Mrs A. Robson, Aparima, have returned to Invercargill. OHAI Miss M. Harper, Dunedin, is visiting her sister, Mrs J. H. Lowrey, for a few days. ... Mrs J. Forde, Winton, is staying with her sister, Mrs D. Mclntosh. Mr J. Broome and Mr and Mrs W. Broome were visitors to town during the week-end for the Blair-Broome wedding on Saturday. Mr D. G. Marshall is relieving Mr W. H. Jones, who together with Mrs Jones and their family is visiting Invercargill and Dunedin. Mrs H. White is at present visiting her sister, Mrs Joseph McKay.
