j • Many adherents of various j forms of sport- can trace the ; success that ultimately came j their way to the ground-work = laid by the coaches of their ! school days, and too often the j work of these men, school ! teachers generally, is lost sight ! of. 1 TJiere is in Dunedin at the ■ present time as inspector of I primary schools one who may 1 rightly lay claim to having given j the foundations to some of New Zealand’s best known Rugby I players, writes “H.P.5.,” in The I Evening Star. He is Mr A. C. = Rowe, who has taught at schools ? in various parts of the South j and North Islands,- but it was j while he was at the St. George ’ school in Invercargill that he 1 saw the possibilities of Frank | Kilby, then a very diminutive I lad, and Kilby himself has often 1 paid tribute to his old coach for | his later success as an All Black. J Another famous All Black I who was coached by Mr Rowe j during his school days was N. = P. McGregor, who likewise has \ acknowledged what he owed to j his old teacher. Mr Rowe has | given coaching best these days, ! but he still retains his interest in 1 Rugby and cricket, and he rej calls with obvious delight the ! performance of a St. George 1 School cricket eleven of which . he had charge in Invercargill I years ago which dismissed an I opposing side for 1 run, the only g mark on the score sheet com- ? ing from a wide! Each bowler 1 took five wickets.
