WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN BED

(United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 28. When firemen entered a house at .35 Rosewarne street, Spreydon, at midnight they found an elderly woman, Edith Ellen McLean, dead in her bed, the room being filled with smoke. When the door was burst open a smouldering mattress burst into flames, but the fire was quickly suppressed. It is thought that the woman, who was alone in the house, had fallen asleep while smoking in bed and had been suffocated by the smouldering mattress.
