SOUTHLAND SKI CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD LAST EVENING “Although the membership did not increase with such rapidity as during the previous season, we have, however, more than maintained last year’s numbers,” stated the annual report of the Southland Ski Club, which was presented at the annual meeting last evening. “The membership today stands at 60 compared with 52 in 1939,” says the report. Numerous trips were run to Garston throughout the winter and on two occasions the club visited Queenstown. The entries for the club championships were the largest since the club’s inception. The results were as follows. —Club champion: D, E. Tatton; runnerup, G. Ryan; men’s downhill, G. Ryan I, D. E. Tatton 2; men’s slalom, D. E. Tatton 1, G. Ryan 2; men’s novice downhill, M. Johnson 1, S. McGibbon 2; men’s novice slalom, M. Johnson 1, L. Leask 2; women’s championship, Miss L. Story; women’s downhill, Mrs A. H. Hamilton 1, Miss L. Story 2; women’s slalom, Miss L. Story 1, Miss J. Macaulay 2; women’s novice downhill, Miss J. Miller 1, Miss B. Kean 2; women’s novice slalom, Miss J. Miller I, Miss Adele Hamilton 2; beginners’ downhill, J. B. Monk 1, F. Gluyas 2. The team which visited Mount Cook' retained the Tasman Cup at the winter sports meeting and won the inter-club competition at Queenstown for which a cup has been given by Messrs A. G. and H. R. Wigley. The annual accounts show the club to be quite sound financially and considering that the main revenue was from subscriptions, this proves quite creditable. The balance owing on the hut has been repaid and with no large expenditure in view the coming financial year should be favourable. The balance of the Sports Trust loan of £25 is repayable within five years at 3 per cent. “The year 1939 will long be remembered by club members as the year of the ‘big snow’ and conditions at Garston were all that could be desired. We were fortunate also in having the services of Mr Otto Santner whose ‘dry-ski-ing’ instruction and tuition on the snow showed such decidedly marked improvement in the standard of the club at the annual competitions. The keen enthusiasm of the members ran high throughout the season and with snow already on the high country, the prospects for the 1940 season should, prove more than favourable,” concludes the report. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr A. H. Hamilton; vice-president, Mr R. J. Smith; lifemember, Mr R. L. Bayne; club captain, Mr R. L. Bayne; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr T. S. Baker; honorary auditor, Mr S. McGibbon; committee, Messrs N. L. Watson, J. B. Monk, E. Thorpe, W. S. ,K. Blackley, G. Ryan, Misses B. Kean, J. Mdcaulay, J. Miller and L. M. Story. It was decided that the dub become an incorporated body and that members serving with the forces be granted leave of absence with honorary membership. It was decided that the opening day be left in the hands of the executive. At the conclusion of the meeting films of ski-ing in New Zealand were shown by Mr N. Adams.
