Red Terror Red Terror shaped well enough at the Southland winter meeting to give him an excellent chance in the Craigmore Steeplechase at Washdyke today. He is a brilliant jumper and the two mile journey should suit him. Not Engaged

Survoy, Power Chief and Smiling Thru, first, second and third in last year’s Great Northern Steeplechase, are missing from the entries this year. Survoy is not in work and Power Chief sustained a fatal fall last winter.

May Do Better Mount Vai was the unlucky horse in the hurdle race at Washdyke, as it was no fault of his that he was unable to jump the last hurdle. Had he not been run off, he would have finished second if not first. Southland Visitors

R. E. McLellan arrived at Washdyke late on Saturday night, having taken his horses through from Invercargill by float. The hurdler Colonel French also has arrived to race at the South Canterbury meeting.

Will Be Supported In his present form Waitoru is entitled to a following in the Elloughton Handicap at Washdyke today. His efforts at Riverton at Easter, when he won on three occasions, stamped him as an outstanding middle distance proposition and he has done well in his work since.

Pink Lad It has taken Pink Lad some time to strike winning form. He has started 15 times this season before recording a win. Pink Lad failed to stay seven furlongs in moderate company at Waimate, and showed that he has trained on by winning over 10 furlongs at Riccarton in 2min 5 4-ssec.

Breeding Curtailed Since the outbreak of the war, English and French breeders have curtailed expendit - re. The Aga Khan, who had been maintaining five studs in France, closed three. Of his 64 mares, he sold 27 to Hungarian buyers for about £BOOO, destroyed six, sold eight for India and five to French breeders. Of his five stallions in France, he sold three. . Good Case The Rules of Racing provide that apprentices may claim allowances in all flat races, other than those for two-year-olds and high-weight handicaps, in which the value to the winner does not exceed £250. A good case can be made out for excluding the two principal races from this provision. Except during the winter period, the minimum weight for these two races is fixed at 7.0, and this prevents the allowance or the full allowance being claimed for horses on or near the minimum. One horse may have honestly earned 71b more than another, but under the existing rule it can meet the other on level terms. Another anomaly occurs in the case of a horse on the 7.0 marks which .wins with an apprentice rider. It may be raised 81b or 91b for its success, but with the same boy on its back it need carry no more than 7.2. The Top-weight

The distinction of being top-weight in both Great Northerns has fallen to the nine-year-old Clarion Call, who has 12.0 in the Hurdles, and 12.5 in the Steeplechase. Only two horses have won the Hurdles with 12.0 or over, Liberator scoring in 1895 with 12.9 and St. Simon, then a four-year-old, in 1897 with 12.12. The record is better iff the steeplechase, Macaroni, a four-year-old, winning in 1895 with 12.0, Levanter in 1897 with 12.1, The Guard in 1902 with 12.2, Kia':re in 1907 with 12.13, Waimai in 1918 with 12.0, and Coalition in 1921 with 12.5. It will thus be readily recognized that it takes a class horse to win either race with as much weight as Clarion Call is called upon to carry. His chance at Te Rapa looks better than at Ellerslie.

WRESTLING DRAWN BOUT AT CHRISTCHURCH (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 15. In a wrestling bout tonight Dan O’Connor (Tennessee), 16st 121 b, drew with “Cowboy” Dick Raines (Texas), 17st. Raines took the first fall in the sixth round with a body press after elbow jolts and back-breakers. O’Connor equalized in the last round with a body press after dumps, dropkicks and elbow jolts.
