BIRCHWOOD HUNT MEET HELD AT ORETI YESTERDAY The Birchwood Hunt opened its new season with a meet at Oreti yesterday. The weather was dull and overcast but two runs were completed before rain fell late in the afternoon. For an opening run there was quite a good number of followers, while the jumping was of a promising standard. The two runs were over a course of six fences on the properties of Messrs W. Woods and J. J. Woods. The ground was on the heavy side but there were no falls.

Those who took part were: Messrs W. Swale (Master) on Bilbo, J. Langford (Huntsman) on Matchem, W. Sheedy (Whip) on Turaki, J. L. Hazlett on Captain Reid), C. F. Low on Gay Deception, J. Harvey on Scottish Queen, J. Morton on Surcoat, P. Boyle on Pandine, C. Low on a Garnish gelding, G. Diack on Captain. A jumping competition resulted:— Captain Reid (J. L. Hazlett) 1 Bilbo (J. Morton) 2 Captain (W. Swale) 3 Mr F. Moore, of Winton, acted as judge. During afternoon tea, the president (Mr J. L. Hazlett) thanked all for their presence and regretted that a number were prevented from attending because of the Oreti river bridge being under repair. “It was difficult for the hunt to know what to do with the world in such a state but it was necessary to qualify steeplechasers for otherwise there would be no jumpers for racing,” he stated. The next hunt will be held at Drummond on Saturday.
