RIVERTON

ANZAC DAY PARADE The Anzac Day parade in Riverion was held before a large attendance. The Waimatuku Pipe Band led the parade, followed by returned soldiers and veterans, the local platoon of territorials under Sergeant J. Banks, Girl Guides and the Boys’ Brigade. Mr W. Trentbath was the marshal. The parade marched to the South African Memorial where wreaths were placed, and continued over the Aparima bridge to the monument. Wreaths were placed and “Last Post” and “Reveille” sounded. The parade reformed and marched to Fleck’s Hall, where a service was held. On the platform were Mr G. Cloughley, president of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association, Major S. Rice, Captain A. Tatten, of the Salvation Army, the Revs. J. A. F. Watson, J. W. Goodman and H. R. Wright. Miss F. Thomson led the singing at the piano. During the singing af the first hymn the Girl Guides and Boys’ Brigade deposited their flags against the platform. Captain Tatten then led those present in prayer. Major Rice, who was the speaker, said Anzac was held sacred to the memory of those who fought and fell for liberty. Although 25 years had passed since the struggle at Gallipoli they realized that by their sacrifice and courage the Anzacs had left a great memory. “We thought no sane nation would embark on another war,” he said. “Where was the vaunted German culture when they allowed themselves to be the credulous sycophants of an unscrupulous barbarism. We were all thrilled by the recent news of naval exploits and we have confidence that our successors are worthily upholding our standard.” GOLF CLUB RESULTS Results of the Coronation Cup matches are:—W.
