Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, returned north by the express yesterday morning. Mr J. A. Gilmour, industrial magistrate, will preside at a meeting of the Arbitration Court in Invercargill today. Mr John Carswell, a member of the Invercargill staff of Wright, Stephenson and Company Ltd., will leave on Saturday for Levin to begin training as a pilot in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Mr J. P. Pickford, of Invercargill, has been appointed assistant to the organizer of the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, Mr P. Linton Hodge and to the secretary, Mr L. S. Alsweiler. Mr Keith Lythgoe, who has enlisted for active service, was bidden farewell by members of the staff of Thomson and Beattie Limited at a gathering which was held at the home of Mr Rodan Thomson on Tuesday night. The presentation of a well-stocked waterproof army holdall was made on behalf of those present by Mr W. Fraser, who spoke highly of Mr Lythgoe’s qualities and wished him a successful career in the service of his country.

Mr R. T. Little has resigned from the editorial staff of The Otago Daily Times, after an association of nearly 40 years with that newspaper, over 30 years having been spent in the position which he has just vacated. On Tuesday afternoon the members of the editorial and literary staffs met Mr Little to wish him a long and happy retirement, and to present him with a smoker’s set as a token of the respect and affection in which he was held by all members of the literary staff. The presentation was made by the editor, Sir James Hutchison, who spoke of the unvarying high quality of Mr Little’s work, his unswerving loyalty to the newspaper, and his many admirable qualities. Mr Little, he said, was a journalist whose painstaking care in everything he wrote was reflected in his polished style and impeccable phraseology, while his unassuming yet engaging personality had contributed very materially to _ the happy relations which had existed among members of the staff. Mr W. E. Anderson has been appointed to succeed Mr T. O. Bishop as secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation. Mr Bishop resigned to take over the full-time secretaryship of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association. Mr Anderson has been connected with the Auckland Employers’ Association for nearly 20 years. He was employers’ representative with the New Zealand delegation to the International Labour Office conference at Geneva in 1937 and served for a short period as employers’ representative on the Second Court of Arbitration. He is at present relieving on the Court of Arbitration in the absence through illness of Mr W. Cecil Prime. It is expected that Mr Anderson will be able to take up his new position soon.—Press Association.

Mr Roy Hessey, M.Sc., A.A.1.C., a former pupil of the Otago Boys’. High School, was awarded the president’s medal for an outstanding paper delivered by him at a conference of sugar technologists at Mackay, Queensland. It is some years since this award was last made.

Mr R. H. Clark, who has been with the Wheat Purchase Board and the Wheat Committee for the last seven years, has been appointed secretaryaccountant to the Co-operative Dairy Company of Otago Ltd., Dunedin. He will take up his new duties on May 6.
