WOMEN, CLAIM MEN’S PAY

(British Official Wireless) RUGBY, April 29. The claim to equal pay for equal work for women going into occupations usually reserved for men has won its first success. In a decision in the Industrial Court on wages for women employed by local authorities as wartime omnibus and tram-car conductors, it is stated that the time principle embodied in the decision cannot inferentially be transferred to other occupations for two reasons: “That the Court’s decision will have a specific, not a general application; and that women’s war work in industry may not so closely correspond to men’s work in the road passenger service. Moreover, the decision has application in war time and is not related to normal time circumstances. Nevertheless, it may point much farther than it reaches.”
