New Fish Story

Fishing in the Opihi river, Mr and Mrs W. Traves, of Timaru, recently caught 36 trout. But (says The Timaru Herald), that is not all. Mrs Traves on one occasion felt a tug on her line and she immediately began to draw it in. Unable to make much headway, she gave an extra hard tug, bringing out a 51b trout. It was too much for the line, which snapped, the fish disappearing back into the stream and taking three hooks with it. Thinking that she would only have the usual story about “the one that got away,” Mrs Traves related the mishap to her husband. An hour later he caught a 51b trout in which were embedded three fish hooks! Interest-Free Loans Interest-free loans now total £1,699,646, including £lOOO from Mr F. Lindsay Ryan, of Sydney, for the duration of the war and six months after.—Press Association. Accident Investigated Inquiries into the accident which presumably caused the death of Patrick Cosgrove, the elderly man whose body was found by the side of the road near Winton on Sunday morning, were continued by the police yesterday. It is believed that Cosgrove was killed on Friday night but because of the long grass and the culvert in which his body was partly lying he was not found until Sunday morning. It is understood that he had not been living in Southland for some years.

Second Crop Of Potatoes A second crop of potatoes, grown in the same ground that the first was taken from was dug on Saturday by Mrs J. Hodges, 62 Mary street, who brought a sample to the office of The Southland Times yesterday. The potatoes, which were planted on December 15, were from seed obtained from France and were of good size and shape. The second crop was not affected by blight.
