WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MATCHES PLAYED IN RAIN WINS FOR INVERCARGILL AND EX-HIGH The second series of matches in the Southland Women’s Hockey Association’s competition were played in cola and wet conditions on Saturday. Both matches were one-sided and the standard of play was not good, the weather and the long grass on the ground preventing players showing their best form. EX-HIGH v. TECHNICAL The smaller players of the Technical College team were outclassed by the more experienced Ex-High tearn and were defeated by 11 goals to nil. Technical fielded only 10 players and this added to the disadvantages of the team. Play was confined to the Technical haff throughout the game, but the team defended doggedly and saved well on many occasions. The teams were:—

Ex-High.—H. Monk, L. Fraser, E. Fox, A. Anderson, H. Hansen, M. Fora, E. Livingston, M. Woods, L. Purvis, S. Monk, J. Wallace. Technical.—H. Withington, B. Greer, L. McDermott, D. Widdowson, J. McGregor, R. Brosnan, R. Watson, N. Peacock, P. Hemmings, O. Hemmings. From the opening bully Ex-High put on pressure and had Technical defending valiantly. Several early attacks were unsuccessful and Technical broke through, but such movements seldom reached the half-way line. There were some weaknesses in the Ex-High attacking units in the opening stages, but the combination improved and scores came freely. The Ex-High fullbacks were not called on once in the game and the goal-keeper similarly was out of the play. In the first half M. Woods scored four goals, L. Purvis two and J. Wallace and L. Fraser one each After the change over Technical showed better combination and the ExHigh attacks were less aggressive. The shooting was not accurate and many attempts at goal failed. L. Purvis scored two more goals and M. Woods one before the end of the game. Mr H. Kelly was the referee.

COLLEGIATE DEFEATS INVERCARGILL

The second match between Collegiate and Invercargill was played in very bad conditions and the halves were shortened on this account with no interval. Collegiate won by six goals to nil. Both teams played short, Invercargill having no goalkeeper. The teams were:—

Collegiate.—A. Bateman, E. Blackie, I Hunter, P. Millard, M. McLeod, N. Wylie, A. Shaw, D. Gray, L. McDonald, O. Butler. Invercargill.—M. Howie, M. Kelly, F. Foulston, E. Edwards, M. Elliotte, H. Sandri, P. Hall, G. Tomlins, L, Cook, F. Watts.

Collegiate was aggressive from the opening of the game and attacked strongly for several minutes, but each movement broke down through unfinished play. The Invercargill backs defended solidly, but after about five minutes A. Shaw scored the first goal for Collegiate. A. Shaw and D. Gray were prominent in the Collegiate attacking movements and between them scored five of the six goals. N. Wylie opened some good scoring movements and showed fine dashing play. When Collegiate had a lead of two goals, Invercargill took a turn on attack, but did not penetrate far into its opponent’s territory. Invercargill held play about mid-field for a time, but Collegiate returned to the attack and continued to score. When play ended A. Shaw had scored three goals, D. Gray two and L. McDonald one. Messrs L. Holmes and H. Kelly were the referees.
