SOUTHLAND GUN DOG CLUB
HIGH STANDARD AT TRIALS The Southland Gun Dog Club held its second trial for the season at River road on Saturday afternoon in adverse weather. Entries were not up to the usual number, but the work of the dogs was of a high order. The judge of the puppy class was Mr P. Hennessey, while Mr G. L. McKenzie judged the novice class and Mr A. G. Fraser the open class. During the afternoon tea was served by women supporters of the club. Detailed results are as follows:— PUPPY CLASS (Single retrieve on land) M. Pasco’s Labrador Rajah, 92pts 1 T. Chamberlain’s Labrador, Black Banner, 85pts 2 J. Leonard’s c.c.r., Prince, 78pts 3 NOVICE CLASS (Single retrieve on land, two dogs on mark) N. Shaw’s Labrador, Realm, 97pts 1 J. Young’c Labrador, Shine, 77pts 2 R. Fairweather’s Labrador, Trixie, 55pts 2 The winner of this class was outstanding, being steady on the mark and finding and retrieving in smart style. The second-placed dog lost only slightly in most departments, while the third dog spoiled his chance by breaking on the mark. OPEN CLASS (Three-bird blind retrieve on land) P. Hennessey’s springer spaniel, Sir Three Star, 87pts 1 T. Pasco’s c.c.r. F.T.C., Major, 86pts 2 S. Lindsay’s Labrador, Lock, 81pts 3 P. Hennessey’s springer spaniel, Dash of Three Star, 79pts 4 C. A. Kerse’s Labrador, Bruce, 68pts 5 The standard of work throughout this class was excellent, and although the winner was slow in finding his second bird he made few mistakes. The second dog found his birds in record time, but was penalized on control and delivery. The other placed dogs lost only slightly in most departments.
