FIRST SUCCESS AS HURDLER

WIN FOR FAR EAST GOOD RUN BY DENSITY IN DONCASTER HANDICAP (Special to The Times) TIMARU, April 28. Guilder went to the front early in the Tekapo Hurdles, but narrowly escaped running off at the first fence. She continued in front through the back stretch and, although still running down the fences, was able to hold a useful lead. Turning for home from Far East, with a bigger break to Ballad, Guilder again ran down the last fence and in trying to jump it sideways fell heavily. This left Far East well clear of Ballad and he went on to win pulling up. Mount Vai struggled on into third place, a length in front of Master Dingle. Far East won on the fiat at the recent Marlborough meeting, but this was his first success as a hurdler. He was probably lucky to win as Guilder had only to survive the last fence to be an easy victor. GOOD FAVOURITE Boloyna was sent out a good favourite for the Electric Stakes and, after being one of the leaders throughout, was defeated in the last stride by Stabilise, who was in front from the early stages. The latter led into the straight from Boloyna, Norse and Schoolgirl. Boloyna joined Stabilise a furlong from tire post and the pair settled down to a hard tussle. Boloyna appeared to be wearing his rival down, but Stabilize hung on to gain the verdict by half a head. Schoolgirl finished better than Norse, with Great Heart and Confidant at the head of the remainder. Both Schoolgirl and Norse were slow to get going. DECISIVE WIN The Black Label-Warfield bracket was installed first choice in the Gladstone Trot. Tire former broke up at the start, but his mate went to the front at the end of three furlongs and led the field for tire remainder of the journey. He entered the straight several lengths in front of Titus, with Brown Tap, Special Force and Passing By handy. Titus did not last long in the run home and Warfield carried on for a decisive win from Brown Tap, who easily held off Passing By, with Special Force a length away. Cold Steel failed to go away.

e WILD TALK’S SUCCESS & There was a widely-distributed pool “> in the Timaru Cup. Wild Talk was ■?' sent out a pronounced favourite and she justified her position by a meritorious win from the lightly-weighted _ Lockit, who had a 71b allowance. Dis- ® dain was the early leader from Lockit, ’> Swordstick, The Wrecker, Knight Commander, Wild Talk and Settlement, and this was the order in the I back stretch until Lockit drew to the front near the six-furlong post. Lockit had a clear advantage entering the 1 straight from The Wrecker, Settlement, - Wild Talk and Cherokee and threw off all challengers until Wild Talk came 3 at him two chains from the post. A i close finish seemed likely, but Wild 3 Talk went right away in the last few ; strides and won comfortably. Knight . Commander put in a telling run over the last furlong to gain third money , from Cherokee. Cape Gabo and Balmenter were next. e EASY VICTORY | Raceaway, favourite for the Smith- * field Hack Handicap, was the first out 1 and led to the entrance of the straight I from Withdrawal, Blue Coat, School--5 girl, Lady Don and Prince Ruenalf. All t these were well bunched a furlong from home, but Withdrawal then drew out and carried on for an easy win , from Schoolgirl, with Rosaleen Dhu a close third, two lengths in front of Prince Ruenalf, Raceaway and Blazealong. ; Gay Lover was in last place entering ‘ the straight and was pulled up a fur- ’ long from the post because of breaking ! a sesamoid bone and he had to be I destroyed. EARLY LEAD Density accounted for the bulk of the investments on the Doncaster Handicap. The five starters got away in a line, but at the end of a furlong Density had drawn to the front and, gradually increasing his lead, was some six lengths in front entering the straight from Petersham and Silver Slipper together, with Auctor close up. Density was never in any danger of being overhauled, notwithstanding that Petersham reduced the gap to about three lengths, but only under sufferance. Auctor was a fair third, three lengths in front of Silver Slipper, with Miltiades tailed off. Density paid more for a place than a win. IMPRESSIVE WIN Tokalon had an impressive win in the Otipua Trot. William Potts failed to go away and Arietta, when racing behind the leading bunch five furlongs from home, lost any chance she had by Top Hand breaking in front of her and stopping her badly. Sunny Corner also met trouble. Erin’s Lad endeavoured to win from the early stages and when the Straight was reached he was clear of Tokalon, Swift Lady and MacGregor. Tokalon trailed Erin’s Lad to within half a furlong from the post, where he was pulled out and he streaked away to win decisively. Swift Lady was a poor third, well clear of Arietta, with MacGregor next.

THE RAKER AGAIN The Rakei - added to his two Oamaru successes by an impressive win in the Rosewill Hack Handicap. King’s Toast was one of the smartest out and had charge over the first three furlongs. He was then joined by The Raker. The pair piloted Gusterina, Pink Lad and Asia into the straight. King’s Toast weakened early in the run home and The Raker soon ran past him to have the result in his keeping a furlong from home. There was a spectacular tussle for the minor placings, Captain Bruce and Great Swoop finishing fast on the outside to be second and third respectively, with Dinah Dhu and Pink Lad abreast close up just in front of King’s Toast. KANURI’S WIN AT ASCOT (Received April 28, 7.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, April 28. Results at the Ascot races were:— WOKINGHAM HANDICAP, £5OO. About six furlongs.
