SPENDTHRIFT AS A JUMPER

BRILLIANT SCHOOLING DISPLAYS

ALL BLOOD ATTRACTS ATTENTION

Brilliant schooling tasks over hurdles by Spendthrift, All Blood and Colonel French were a feature of training operations at Invercargill on Saturday morning. After rain during the night the track was heavy and several showers fell during the proceedings. There was a good amount of galloping carried out, Sea Lady impressing most by a seven-furlong task. The poles on the course proper- were about 30 feet out.

Spendthrift (T. J. Boyle) and Milford (J. Taylor) went out to jump three hurdles, but Milford dropped his rider at the first and Spendthrift completed the task on his own. His exhibition was a very fine one and he took his fences in his stride. He is to make his first appearance as a hurdler at the Southland meeting and he should give a good account of himself.

Milford was brought out later with Colonel French (T. J. Boyle) and All Blood (E. J. Jennings). Colonel French and All Blood soon opened a lead of several lengths from Milford, who completed his task safely on this occasion. The other two gave a great display, keeping together right through, and taking the obstacles in bold fashion. It was as good a display of clean, fast jumping as could be wished for. Blissful Lady (Ward) went away two or three lengths ahead of Colonel Rouge (Forde) at the six but the latter was soon in front. They finished together in lmin 24sec, the last half in 57sec. A USEFUL SEVEN Sea Lady was to have gone a mile, but she was held back over the first furlong, running the last seven in lmin 37sec and the last half in 56sec. This ■was an exceptionally good gallop as she finished strongly and the going did not appear to worry her. Wild Coon and Cintilla were together at the end of six furlongs in lmin 24 2-ssec, the last half being covered in 57 2-ssec. Both were doing it well. Mondello (Ward) and Pink Bond (Connor) took lmin 40sec to run seven furlongs, the last half in 59sec. Considering that both carried welterweights it was a useful effort. Waitoru (R. E. Humphries), Mona’s Song (Preston) and Aspire jumped

away from the mile post, but Aspire soon dropped to the rear. Waitoru and Mona’s Song were together at the end of the mile in lmin 55 3-ssec, the first two in 28 l-ssec and the last half in 59 l-ssec. Aspire, who was not in a galloping humour, was two ox - three lengths away. Silkwood (Shaw) and Wild Career jumped away from the mile and aquarter post, running the first six in lmin 25sec and the full journey in 2min 23 4-ssec. The last half was run in 58 4-ssec and the last mile in lmin 54 4-ssec. Wild Careel’ was two lengths cleax - at the post, but Silkwood was "finishing on again. This represented a good effort on the part of both.

BLACK BARD WELL Black Bard (Humphries) and Royal Money (Connor) beat Bilbao (Preston) over six furlongs in lmin 24sec, the last half in 57 2-ssec. Black Bard put a lot of dash into his work while Royal Money had much the worst of the weights Bilbao ran about a good bit. Susie (Shaw) and Royal Lancer (Preston) took lmin 26 2-ssec to run | six furlongs, the last half in 57 4-ssec. | Heidelberg (Ward) and Ortyx (Low) ran an easy seven in lmin 44sec, the last half in 58 2-ssec. Both are in excellent order. Several others were worked, including Robalink, Baitruin, Guste, Gold Robe and Strathalbyn.
