Mrs H. C. Mackenzie, Swinton street, is spending a few days in Wellington. Mrs R. Lund, Herbert street, and her children returned yesterday from a fortnight’s visit to Christchurch. Madame Winnie Fraser, who was the guest of Miss E. M. Stead, Conon street, left at the week-end for Heriot. Miss Hilary Jones, Dunedin, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs C. F. A. Jones, Earnslaw street. Miss Mary Nichol, Clifton, was hostess at q dance at her home on Saturday evening in honour of Mr John Carswell. Mrs A. A. Tcnnent, who has been visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs W. J. A. McGregor, Grey street, left last week for Wellington. Mr and Mrs W. A. Ott, Gala street, and their guests Mr and Mrs J. G. Ott, San Francisco, were visitors to Queenstown and the Eglinton Valley last week. Mrs R. B. Ham, Dunedin, who was the guest of Mrs S. G. Dinniss, Ramrig street, returned to her home at the week-end. Miss E. M. Hunt, Auckland, who was the guest of the Misses Finlayson, Tweed street, last week, left at the week-end for Dunedin. Mrs W. G. Stead, Hastings, who has been the guest of Mrs A. S. Gilkison, Avenal Flats, will leave today for Queenstown, where she will stay with her sister, Mrs W. Menlove. Mr and Mrs J. M. Connolly and their two children, Dunedin, who are spending a holiday in Invercargill as the guests of Mrs J. Deegan, Earnslaw street, will return north at the end of this week. Miss June Carswell, Gladstone terrace, was hostess at a dinner party on Saturday evening in honour of her brother, Mr John Carswell, who leaves for Levin next Saturday to begin his training with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. On Friday evening a meeting was held at the home of Mrs T. F. Gilkison, Grey street, when about 28 girls were

present, and a Gladstone Girls’ Patriotic Club was formed. Mrs Gilkison was appointed president, Mrs R. P. Fish (vice-president), Miss J. Tapper (chairman) and Miss B. Shepherd (secretary and treasurer). The following committee was elected: Misses P. Drewe, L. Robertson, M. Webb, J. Carswell, J. Newth and M. Gilkison. A social committee was also formed. The next meeting will be held irfxt Thursday at the home of Mrs Brian Hewat at 7.30 Ip.m. and any other girls interested arc invited to attend. CLOSING OF CROQUET SEASON FLEMING SHIELD WON BY NORTHEND CLUB The closing of the Northend Croquet Club’s 1939-40 season was held last week. Competitions were held on the lawns, all clubs being well represented. Mrs A. M. Macdonald, president of the Southland Croquet Association, presented the Fleming Shield to the Northend Club, winner of the senior inter-club matches played in the Southland district. Mrs J. Blue (president) accepted the shield on behalf of the club, this being the second time it has held the shield in 14 years. Southend held it once, and Gore for the other years. The following were the winners of the competitions held during the afternon: Golf croquet, Mrs Low (Rugby Park); ladder, Mrs J. A. Fraser (Northend); corner ball, Miss Perrin (Invercargill); hoops, Mrs Anderson (Georgetown); French croquet, Miss L. Cockroft (Northend); No. 1 competition, Miss Mitchell; No. 2 competition, Mrs J. Humphries. POPULAR DANCE AT CLIFDEN MR AND MRS H. BROWN ENTERTAIN

On a recent evening, Mr and Mrs H. Brown, who have recently been married, entertained their friends _at a dance in the Clifden Hall. Music was supplied by Mr R. Broomhall. Extras were played by Miss N. Scott and Mr R. Watson. Mr D. Johnston was master of ceremonies. ■ A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss E. O’Brien and Mr F. Beggs. Solos were sung by Messrs Brown, Smith and Sheehan. Mr J. Chamberlain spoke on behalf of the visitors, making a presentation to Mr and Mrs Brown, thanking them for a most enjoyable evening.
