f Packed stands and packed embank--5 ments at Lancaster Park this afternoon - saw the first Army Rugby matches of 1 the present war under perfect condi--1 tions. A crowd estimated at 10,000 i enjoyed fast and thrilling play proJ vided by four teams of remarkably fit L ’ and vigorous soldier-footballers. *■ In the opening match the South • Island Air Force team beat the North ■ Island Air Force, 9-8. All the players ’ in the match came from the Royal L New Zealand Air Force station at Wig- '■ ram. The scorers were: South Island: ’ H. P. Evans, J. E. Price, J. G. Dun- " stan (tries). North Island: M. G. Lucas ! and G. Engel (tries), and W. F. Nelson 1 (conversion). ! In the second match, the main one 1 of the afternoon, the Trentham Army team beat the Burnham Army Team, 12-9. It was the greater dash and more compact scrummaging of the Trentham forwards that gaVe their side victory. The Trentham backs were also quick to grasp opportunities and were slightly superior in concerted work. The scorers from Trentham were: Sergeant D. C. Latham and Private F. Richardson (tries), Sergeant D. G. Barton (two penalty goals). For Burnham SecondLieutenant R. K. King. New Zealand League captain in 1939, and Private J. McLean scored tries and the latter kicked a penalty goal.

AUCKLAND The Rugby season in Auckland opened on Saturday afternoon, the principal attraction being a match between a combined fifteen from Papakura and Ngaruawahia Camps and a team representing the 28th Maori Battalion from Palmerston North. The combined team won by 18 points to 3, scoring four tries, three converted, to an unconverted try. The scorers for the combined team were: Bombardier W. J. Kirkley (2), Gunner R. J. Paterson and Second-Lieutenant C. S. Pepper. Trooper K. J. Hanna converted three of the tries. Corporal E. N. Howell scored for the Maoris.
