ATHLETICS

ST. PAUL’S CLUB

YEAR’S WORK REVIEWED

“The past year, although being from the point of view of individual success one of our best, has on the other hana been constantly hampered, mainly by the outbreak of war and the enlistment of members for active service,” stated the annual report of the St. Paul’s Harrier and Athletic Club which was adopted at the annual meeting of the club.

A large number of members had enlisted in the military forces, the report stated. “We feel sure that no other club in this Dominion can boast so many active members so generously responding to duty. Their spirit and example are admirable and we feel sure that this was due, to a large extent, to their long association with the club and its ideals. “The roll shows an increase over previous years. As is to be expected in war time, most are juniors and we are pleased to record that among them we have some outstanding performers to whom the club can look for continued progress in future years. “The attendance at harrier meetings during the year was somewhat affected by the bad weather. However, in spite of this, the numbers were very satisfactory. The season generally was very successful, although for the first time on record the club lost the Southland Amateur Sports Trust Cup road race. The club was also very unfortunate in losing the Southland cross-country event by the small margin of one point. “The track season opened in November and although many members were unable to compete regularly, the club met with outstanding successes. We were successful in winning three of the five cups presented by the Southland Harrier and Amateur Athletic Association for most points during the season. In championship events also the club was well represented. C. Harvey showed excellent form at both the Southland and Otago provincial title meetings and was selected to represent Otago at the New Zealand championships. K. Laidlaw competed with outstanding success, carrying the club’s colours to victory in the Otago junior championships and representing _ that province at the New Zealand junior meeting. “The club championships lapsed this year because of the absence of active members with the forces and the unfavourable weather, but we intend, with a return of normal times, to revive them.”

The report was adopted. The following office-bearers were elected: —Patrons, The Hon. Adam Hamilton, the Rev. C. J. Tocker, and Mr J. D. Gilmore; president, Mr T. B. Dorman; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Atley, W. S. Ayson, L. Boyer, W. J. Clark sen., J. Dunlop, A. E. Harvey, G. Mcßurney, A. P. F. Petrie, W. Pullar, W. J. Clark jun., W. E. Mclndoe; harrier captain, Mr A. L. Hind; deputy captains, Messrs R. Dixon, W. S. Ayson and C. Lea; coach, Mr L. G. Pullar; reporter, Mr C. Lea; treasurer, Mr G. A. Couling; secretary, Mr C. F. Harvey; committee, Messrs W. J. Atley, A. W. B. Walker, W. Moir, A. McGill and N. J. Dorman.

The balance-sheet showed a good credit balance.
