Stranded Port Bowen
The Wanganui Harbour Board has agreed to take over the wreck of the overseas vessel Port Bowen, lying on Castlecliff Beach, states a Wanganui correspondent. The Port Bowen ran aground early on the morning of July 19 last. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to refloat her, and it was eventually decided by the owners, the Port Line, London, to remove the cargo of frozen meat, butter, and wool from the holds. This was done by means of a ramp and the building of a road, over which lorries were able to reach the ship’s side. The agents in Wanganui for the Port Line intimated that they had received advice from their principals that they were willing for the board to take over the vessel without any payment, the board to release the owners from all liabilities to remove the wreck. The offer was accepted subject to the consent of the Minister of Marine being obtained and subject to the ascertaining of the position about Customs duty in respect to the wreck. The Late Frank Wootton
