OVERTIME WITHOUT PAYMENT

PUBLIC SERVICE SCHEME ABANDONED (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 23. A proposed scheme by which the personnel of the Public Service should agree to work overtime without pay for a few hours a week as a contribution to the war effort has, it is understood, been abandoned. The proposal, which emanated from the Public Service Association as a gesture to help the country, was that officers of all grades in various departments should agree to give up to eight or 10 hours a week of their leisure time to assist in preparing the national register of man-power for the war. An officer of one department said today that the scheme had been killed by the unfavourable attitude of the younger men in the service, particularly temporary employees.

CIVIL SERVICE WORKING HOURS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 23. As from May 1, working hours in the Civil Service will be from 8.25 to 12.30 a.m. and 1.30 to 5 p.m., replacing the present schedule of 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4.35. It is explained in official quarters that the new hours will be of particular advantage to working conditions in the South Island and it is felt also that they will be more acceptable to the business and commercial community generally.
