TRIBUTE TO MEMORY OF MR SAVAGE

“HIS NAME WILL LIVE IN

HISTORY OF N.Z.” (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 23. A tribute to the memory of the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage was paid by the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) when referring in an address last night to the proposal to erect a national memorial to his predecessor. Mr Savage was mourned, he said, wherever social progress was valued and democracy treasured and his name would live in the history of New Zealand and humanity in general. An invitation had been issued to the people of New Zealand to unite in erecting a national memorial to Mr Savage’s life and work at his last resting-place, Bastion Point, Auckland. The invitation was by no means a party one and was extended to everyone. It was felt the memorial should be, in every sense, a people’s memorial, symbolizing the esteem and regard of all the people of New Zealand.
