NINE RECRUITS YESTERDAY
Southland Total Is Now 1700
SEVENTEEN MEN PASS MEDICAL TEST Nine men enlisted for military service at the Invercargill Army Office yesterday. That number brought the total for the last three days to 48 and the grand total of enlistments for Southland to 1700. Of yesterday’s recruits only four names were available for publication. They were:— Single N. E. Andrews. R. L. Chilton. C. E. Walker. E. G. Wallace. Twenty-seven men were medically examined yesterday. Seventeen were passed fit, three were classed as temporarily unfit and seven permanently unfit.
MEMBER OF GORE COUNCIL ENLISTS Mr E. George Wallace, who is serving his first term as a borough councillor at Gore, has enlisted for overseas service. Mr Wallace topped the poll at the 1938 election and is a valuable member of the council’s works committee. Mr Wallace was born at East Gore and he received his education at the East Gore and Gore High Schools. He was employed for 12 years as a skin buyer by Mr J. Casey, and for the last 11 years he has been conducting a business of his own.
XRAY EXAMINATION AT AUCKLAND
(United Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 23. At the rate of about one a minute, 120 recruits for the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force underwent X-ray examination at the Auckland hospital tonight. As fast as technicians exposed the film and despatched it to the darkroom for rapid developing, the routine was repeated, man after man taking his place before the screen with swift regularity until the full group was completed within two hours. Nearly 150 square feet of film was used.
