CATTLE SECTION LARGER

EASING IN PRIME BEEF

LITTLE CHANGE IN SHEEP VALUES

The cattle sections at the Lomeville stock sale yesterday were well filled, but there were substantial decreases in the entries of sheep and lambs. The fat cattle sale was not a keen one, prices being on a similar level to last week at the opening, but declining later by about 15/- a head. Calves made up a good proportion of the store cattit, entry and met a good demand at fairly good prices. Very few fat wethers were included in the sheep pens and as the quality was poor rates were slightly easier. Freeing ewes sold readily at the improved schedule rate, but butchers’ ewes were unchanged at the previous level. The fat lamb entry was a small one, prices being equal to the export schedule. The store sheep entry showed a marked decline in numbers and included a substantial proportion of cull ewes and lambs which were hard to sell. Following are the entries in the individual sections for the last two

Included in yesterday’s yarding were 12 dairy cows, one bull, four vealers and 50 rams. FAT CATTLE The entry of fat cattle was considerably larger than a week ago and included some good quality cattle of all classes. During the first half of the sale values were up to the average of the previous sale, but in the later stages there was an easing of about 15/- a head. The entry of fat sheep was much smaller than that at the previous sale and was composed mainly of ewes, the majority of which were of very good quality. The entry of fat wethers was disappointing. In keeping with the recent increase in the export schedule freezing ewes were dearer, but butchers’ ewes remained steady at last week’s rates. The wethers, which were mostly light and of poor quality were a little easier. Freezing buyers operated freely for ewes. Good quality wethers realized from 27/- to 28/-, medium 24/- to 25/-, unfinished 21/- to 22/6; best butchers’ ewes up to 21/-, freezing ewes up to 19/-.

There was a very small entry of fat lambs, the majority being of poor quality. Best lambs sold at up to 29/-, medium 24/- to 25/-, light weights 20/to 22/-.
