PRIMARY SCHOOL COMMITTEES

BIENNIAL MEETINGS OF HOUSEHOLDERS REPORTS FROM COUNTRY CENTRES The following additional reports of the biennial meetings of householders to elect primary school committees throughout Southland have been received. FERNDALE.— Five householders were present and Mr G. B. Hastie presided. The roll number for the school is 18 and the average attendance for the year was 16.1. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing two years:—Messrs G. B. Hastie (chairman), R. J. Scott (secretary), G. A. Scott, V.-Dickie and T. Mawhinney. A strong committee has now replaced the commissioners appointed at the last householders’ meeting.

EASTERN BUSH.— About six householders were present and Mr N. E. Moffat presided. The roll number for the school is 11. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing year:—Messrs N. E. Moffat (chairman), D. A. Mac Gibbon (secretary), A. W. Mac Gibbon, G. Fowle and G. Cowie. ATHOL.— About seven householders were present and Mr Callendar presided. The roll number for the school is 26 and the average attendance for the year was 23.7. The annual statement showed a credit balance of £5O/16/11. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing year:—Mr Pizey (chairman), Mr Lamont (secretary), Mrs Harvey, Mrs Henderson and Mr Garthwaite. This year £5 was spent on the library and a sewing machine was purchased for the girls. TISBURY.— At the final meeting before the election there was a full committee present, Mr T. Gilson being chairman. The monthly accounts were passed for payment and the school report by the head master, Mr A. Kinross, read as follows: Roll, Boys 56, girls 57, total 113; admissions one, withdrawals nil. The hand washing trough installed by Messrs Lawrence and Purdue during the Easter holidays is proving very successful. A visit was paid by the school medical officer, Dr Rippin. The school hedges have been trimmed and the swing posts removed. The grounds are looking tidy and neat. The headmaster then expressed the thanks of the teachers for the improvements which had taken place and said they were appreciated by teachers and pupils alike. The chairman also expressed his appreciation for co-opera-tion he had received from the committee during’ the past term. At the election

for a new committee to act for a term of two years the following were elected: Messrs T. Gilson, F. Evans, C. Purdue, G. Jacquiery, E. W. Lawrence, W. Shepherd and W. White. Mr T. Gilson was elected chairman and C. Purdue secretary. A short meeting of the new committee was held after the election. FAIRFAX.— There were five householders present. The statement showed a credit balance of £47. The roll number is 44. The following were elected to the committee: Messrs W. T. Oliver (chairman), E. J. Edie (secretary), A. Prentice, C. Coster and L. Darragh. OTERAMIKA.— The biennial householders’ meeting was attended by six persons, Mr James Wilson presiding. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance in hand of £ll/0/3, a large sum having been spent on ground improvements during the past two years. The following were elected to the committee:—Messrs James Wilson, L. Glass, E. Hansen, I. Kelly and J. Jefcoate —all members of the previous committee. At a subsequent meeting of the new committee Mr J. Wilson was elected chairman and Mr L. Glass secretary. ORAWIA.— Eight householders were present and Mr George Black presided. The roll number for the school is 35 and the average attendance for the year was 33.8. The annual statement showed a credit balance of £23 6/-. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing year:— Messrs J. Chamberlain (chairman), W. Mclntosh (secretary), A. V. Laurie, G. Findlay, D. Hamilton. Mr R. Wyeth, the retiring secretary, was accorded a hearty vote of appreciation for his long and faithful service of 25 years as secretary of the school committee. Mr Black, the retiring chairman, was also accorded a vote of appreciation.
