Tire Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, who is a patient in the Bowen street hospital, Wellington, was reported last evening to have spent a comfortable day. Mr Lee Martin went into hospital on Sunday—Press Association. Dr A. Owen-Johnston returned yesterday from Akaroa, where he attended the centennial celebrations. Mr F. G. Clark, who has been chief clerk in the railways district traffic manager’s office at Invercargill for the past 13 months, will leave tomorrow morning to take up the position of assistant traffic manager at Dunedin. Mr Clark will be replaced by Mr F. S. Gray, of the Wellington office. Mi' J. W. Hinchey, district accountant at the Public Trust Office, Timaru, has been appointed to the position of district accountant at Invercargill in place of Mr G. W. Scott, who has been transferred to Wellington. Before his departure, Mr Scott was farewelled by the staff of the local office and presented with a silver tea-service as a token of esteem.

Mr R. W. Knight, of the staff of the railway manager’s office, has received advice of his transfer to the position of stationmaster at Pleasant Point, South Canterbury.

Mr John Rule, of Kauana, left last week to spend a holiday with relations in the North Island. He will also visit the Centennial Exhibition. Dr W. Bremner Highet, M. 8., Ch.B., F.R.C.S. (England), eldest son of Mr and Mrs David Highet, Overtoun Terrance, Hataitai, has been awarded the Lord Nuffield Scholarship in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Wingfield Morris Orthopaedic Hospital, Oxford. Dr Highet graduated at Otago University, after winning a junior university scholarship from the Otago Boys’ High School. He accompanied the Byrd Antarctic Expedition of 1934 as medical officer, afterwards returning with the expedition to America. For some time he studied in the United States under leading orthopaedic authorities. For the past five years he has been engaged in post-graduate medical and surgical work in England. The 102nd birthday of Captain J. Corbett-Scott, of Manukau road, Auckland, fell last Monday. Captain Cor-bett-Scott is the only survivor of the band of Europeans who held the Pukekohe East Church against an assault by the Waikato Maoris in 1863.
