LETTERS WRITTEN BY PUPILS

REPLIES RECEIVED FROM ENGLAND In continuance of the scheme of let-ter-writing in operation at the Winton District High School, a number of letters sent to England some months ago has produced results in the form of a bundle of letters just received from a school in Surrey, the head master being Mr G. Paul, brother of Mr J. Paul, Winton. The writers, whose ages range from nine years to 11, give intimate glimpses into their own home life, as well as some idea of the effect of the war on the population of England. One little correspondent described the arrangements by which pupils could obtain a hot lunch at the school canteen at a cost of fourpence. Another mentioned that as their own school could make no provision for air-raid shelters, they had moved to another school where additional space made this precaution possible. A third referred to the severity of the weather experienced at the end of January, when hard frosts burst the water pipes, causing the school to be closed for a fortnight. WOMEN’S GOLF An L.G.U. match and Avon trophy match, together with the A. E. Smith trophy, match is to be played by the women on the Winton golf links tomorrow. Second Division.—Mrs Gleeson 123-36-87; Miss Mclndoe 123-36-87; Mrs Kean 131-36-95; Miss E. Norman 135-36-99. MEN’S TENNIS In the semi-final of the men’s championship of the Winton Tennis Club, G.
