Mrs J. R. Hanan left at the week-end for a short visit to Christchurch. Mrs D. A. McDonald, Grey street, left yesterday for a visit to Christchurch. Mrs Janies Hargest, Rakauhauka, will leave tomorrow for a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs H. J. Macalister, Duke street, returned on Saturday from Stewart Island. Mrs P. W. Gresson and her children, Albert street, left at the week-end for a holiday in Tiinaru. Mrs R. J. Gilmour, Herbert street, will leave on Wednesday for a weeks stay in Queenstown. Miss Betty Macdonald, Avenal was hostess at a small supper party honour of Miss Wynnis Armour and Mr B. Giller at the week-end. Mrs J. T. Bath, Leet street, who with Mr Bath has been on a holiday visit to Wellington, Napier, Ta.uranga, Gisborne, Auckland and Whangarei, has returned to Invercargill. At the outbreak of war, Miss Norma Davidson, a New Zealand nurse, joined the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Milltary Nursing Service Reserve, bne has recently been called up for duty in Palestine. Another New Zealand nurse whose destination will be Palestine is Miss Beth Manchester (Waimate). Miss Nell Wilkinson (Christchurch), who is with the Queen Alexandra’s Nursing Service in France, has been transferred from an ambulance train to a base hospital.
As Anzac Day falls on Thursday, the meeting which was to have been held on that day to form a Girls’ Patriotic Club in the Gladstone area will now be held on Friday evening. The meeting will be at the home of Mrs T. F. Gilkison, 74 Grey street, at 7.30 p.m. and Mrs R. P. Fish will be in charge of proceedings. All those interested are asked to attend and to take their friends.
OTAUTAU RACING CLUB’S MEETING
TAILORED TWEEDS WORN ON SATURDAY
There was a fair attendance at the Otautau Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday, which was held in pleasant weather at Invercargill racecourse. Tailored tweeds, always popular for country wear, were generally worn, and among them were some of the new striped coats. A much-admired ensemble was of deep burgundy red, both coat and hat being richly trimmed with natural grey squirrel fur. Among those present were: Mesdames C. C. Anderson, O. G. Gilmour, A. A. QUEEN CARNIVAL IN INVERCARGILL AREAS OF PRINCESSES DEFINED The district areas for the patriotic queen carnival in Invercargill have been defined as follows: — Navy Princess.—Gladstone and Waikiwi, South Invercargill A (from Tyne street to Biggar- street, Elies road and Otatara). Army Princess.—East Invercargill, Avenal-Northend, South Invercargill B (from Dalrymple street to Clifton). Air Force Princess.—North Invercargill, Georgetown, Central (Gala street to Forth street, Elies road to the Estuary).
COUNTRY NEWS WOODLANDS Mrs A. A. Heenan, and her son, Murray, are spending the weekend in Dunedin.
Mrs R. Dewe has returned home after spending a holiday with her daughter, Mrs J. S. Paterson, Ohai. Mr and Mrs D. Belcher and their family are on holiday in the North Island.
Mr and Mrs T. Smith and their small son Graeme, Dunrobin Station, Mossburn, were recently the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Frew. Miss Winifred Armstrong, Timaru, is the guest of Mr and Mrs W. T. Lightfoot.
KENNINGTON Mr L. Burgess has returned from a visit to Wellington, where he visited the Centennial Exhibition. Mrs G. Matheson has returned from a holiday spent in Christchurch. Mrs Nisbet and Mrs Cardno, who were recent guests of Mrs Matheson, have returned to Invercargill. Mrs J. Fox and Miss Gladys Fox have returned from Gore, where they spent their holidays.
QUEENSTOWN Sir Harry Batterbee and his niece, Miss I- Biggar- spent a short time in Queenstown on their return north. Mr and Mrs R. Robins are visiting Wellington for the Centennial Exhibition. Mr and Mrs J. V. Allen, Lower Shotover, are visitors to .Wellington for the Exhibition. Mr and Mrs F. J. Bell, of Dunedin,
who have been spending a holiday in Queenstown, have returned home. Mr and Mrs R. Skinner are spending a holiday in Mosgiel. Mrs B. Curtis has been paying a visit to Christchurch. Lady Wood, London, is at present paying a visit to Queenstown. Mrs G. A. Herbert and Miss Diana Herbert have left to pay a visit to Wellington.
