BIRTHDAY OF HITLER
Bouquets Sent To Chancellery
GREETINGS FROM CROWDS
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received April 21, 7.30 p.m.) BERLIN, April 20. Numbers gathered on the Wilhelmsplatz before midnight in order to be the first to congratulate Herr Hitler on his birthday. They cheered when the clock struck 12 o’clock. Hundreds of bouquets are arriving at the Chancellery. Herr Hitler announced numerous promotions, the most notable being that of Lieutenant-General Ernst Udet, an ace of the Great War, who is made an air force general. General Udet visited England in 1937. He is reputed to have accounted for 62 Allied aeroplanes in the Great War. Herr Hitler three times appeared on the balcony of the Chancellery to acknowledge birthday greetings from the crowds. King Victor Emmanuel of Italy, Signor Mussolini and Count Galeazzo Ciano, the Italian ForeignMinister, telegraphed congratulations. Dr Josef Goebbels, Nazi Minister of
Propaganda, broadcasting on the eve of Herr Hitler’s birthday, said that Britain’s greatest mistake was the assumption that she was fighting Hitlerism and not the German people. The nation was united in its devotion to Herr Hitler, who was the incarnation of the German spirit. “We are unable to imagine that it could ever be otherwise in the future,” he said.
