MEN’S MATCHES

Competition Games

Begun

GOOD PLAY ON HEAVY GROUNDS In ideal weather, but on grounds which were heavy from recent rains, the Southland Men’s Hockey Association’s competitions were begun at Queen’s Park on Saturday afternoon. The standard of hockey was quite high for so early in the season and individualflashes of really good form were revealed, particularly in the senior grade. Play was, to a certain extent, however, marred by the state of the grounds. In the senior competition Civil Service beat Collegiate by Six goals to five in a good, well-contested game, and Central A beat Central B by 10 goals to nil. In the intermediate grade Collegiate beat High School by three goals to two. In the junior competition High School A beat Technical College A by two goals to one, and High B drew with Technical B, each team scoring one goal.

CLOSELY CONTESTED GAME CIVIL SERVICE BEATS COLLEGIATE The game between Collegiate and Civil Service was well contested and there was little between the teams. Civil Service had the better of the play in the first half and looked like winning, but on the resumption of play Collegiate recovered well and kept the other team on the defensive for most of the second half. Ruthven in the backs and I. Campbell in the forwards played well for Civil Service. The Collegiate forwards played well as a combination and N. Speirs was outstanding among the backs. The teams were:—

CIVIL SERVICE: W. Barraclough, Ruthven, Burns, H. Rennick, Keane, K. Semmens, George, Gray, I. Campbell, Skelt, D. G. Hardcastle. COLLEGIATE: Fearn, J. Fenton, N. Speirs, O. Cochrane, McMillan, Martin, J. Waddell, D. Davidson, E. Booth, G. Davidson, S. Mason. Civil Service attacked from the first bully but the Collegiate goal remained safe, the defensive work of the backs being equal to the attack. For the first 15 minutes play was indecisive though Collegiate had slightly the better of the play. Then a forward rush by Civil Service took the ball into Collegiate’s territory and I. Campbell sent in a good sc >ring shot. In the next few minutes Campbell netted the ball twice and Skelt followed with another good goal, making the score: Civil Service 4, Collegiate nil.

Just before half-time Collegiate rallied strongly and a good dribbling rush by Booth and D. Davidson carried play into Civil Service’s circle. Booth sent in a good shot to Davidson who netted the ball from close in. Halftime sounded with the scores Civil Service 4, Collegiate 1

Collegiate turned the tables in the second half and the Civil Service goal was continuously harried by the Collegiate forwards. Barraclough ’■■as responsible for some good saves but Collegiate was able to bring its score to five, Waddell, Booth, Mason and G. Davidson scoring in turn. Campbell added two more goals to Civil Service s total and the game ended with the . ires:

Civil Service 6; Collegiate 5 Messrs J. D. Gregg and H. E. Perrin were the referees.

CONVINCING WIN FOR CENTRAL A B TEAM OVERWHELMED The final score was ? fairly good indication of the game between Central A and Central B. The A team was too strong a combination and although Centr: ’ B put up a good performance it was no match for the others. P. Cook was very sound in goal and the back line was formidable, with Hennessey outstanding. It was quite a bright game in spite of the uneven score and good form was shown for a first-of-the-season match. In the first half Speirs scored twice and Hennessey obtained four goals. Lythgoe and Speirs each scored a goal in the second half and Hennessey brought his tally to six. The teams were:—

CENTRAL A: A. Osman, J. Gunn, T. Hennessey, N. Speirs, E. Kelman, K. Lythgoe, W. Semmens, L. Fyffe, S. Taylor, B. Lowe, P. Cook. CENTRAL B: Fredric, N. Lee, M. Jones, R. Watson, F. Farley, I. Martin, J. Harvey, W. Robertson, N. Hinton, D. McKillop, K. McKenzie. Messrs F. Hinton and W. R. Curwen were the referees.

INTERMEDIATE GRADE COLLEGIATE (3) v. HIGH SCHOOL (2) Collegiate beat High School by three goals to two in a good, fast game in which Collegiate showed a slight superiority. Skelt scored both goals for High School and Martin (2) and Cockroft were the scorers for Collegiate. The half-t ; me score was one all. Mr F. Hinton was the referee.

JUNIOR GRADE HIGH SCHOOL A (2) v. TECHNICAL A (1) High School A defeated Technical College A by two goals to one in a good even game in which the teams were well matched. The game was a little ragged but if the teams had not had time to form a good combination they made up for this with dash and determination. Mr I. Speirs was the referee. HIGH SCHOOL B (1) v. COLLEGIATE B (1) 1 The game between High School B and Technical College B resulted in a draw, each side securing one goal. Mr C. J. K. Lythgoe was the referee.
