APPEAL LODGED BY WORKERS
MAGISTRATE’S DECISION UPHELD (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 19. The decision of Mr J. Gilmour, S.M., about the application of the New Zealand Dairy Factory Employees’ Award, against which an appeal was lodged by the workers, has been upheld by a majority decision in the Arbitration Court. The workers claimed that workers in factories were entitled to overtime and additional holidays if they were required to work seven days a week. The Magistrate found the hours prescribed in the award were for a sixday week and that work on the seventh day was governed by a clause providing for a seven-day week where not more than two workers were employed. Consequently, he held that the time worked on the seventh day should not be included in the weekly total for the purpose of arriving at the amount of overtime payable.
