OTAGO WOMEN’S GOLF TITLE

MISS HUDSON BEATS MISSjSMITH DISAPPOINTING DISPLAY IN FINAL

(Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, April 19. Playing very steady golf in conditions that were far from easy, Miss Zoe Hudson, the Canterbury women’s golf champion, today added the 1940 Otago title to her record. Although overhead conditions were not unpleasant the course was very wet and good scoring was extremely difficult. In such circumstances Miss Hudson’s performance in beating Miss K. Shand (Otago) in a semi-final by 3 and 1 and Miss Claire Smith (Invercargill) in the final by 4 and 3 was a highly meritorious one. She showed herself in her first Otago tournament to be a first-class stroke producer and the possessor of an ideal tournament, temperament. Miss Hudson’s match in the semi-final was not an easy one. Miss Shand failed mainly through lack of experience. Miss Smith won her semifinal by default from Mrs Dodgshun, the defender of the title, who caught a chill from the wetness of Thursday and was unable to play. The final promised to be interesting, but Miss Smith was well below form. She was out-driven by the Christchurch player and was unable to find her customary touch with her irons. Miss Hudson impressed as a player likely to go a long way in tournament golf. This was the third consecutive Otago tournament in which Miss Smith has been a finalist without winning the title and her form today did not do her justice. The final was disappointing. Miss Hudson’s all-round game was definitely superior on the day to that of Miss Smith.

MISS SMITH’S GOOD START The Invercargill player had much the better of the start, winning the first two holes. Both duffed their seconds at the first, but Miss Hudson went too boldly for the cup with a long putt and took two more. Miss Smith’s 5 was a win. At the second she had a five-foot putt for a 3, but a 4 was good enough for a win. Then Miss Hudson settled down to her game. She laid Miss Smith a stymie on the third green and when the latter’s attempt to chip into the hole failed a 4 won and left Miss Smith 1 up. There were two good 3’s at the fourth and Miss Hudson squared the match at the fifth. Miss Smith put her third into a bunker, while Miss Hudson played a beautiful approach and was down in 5 to 6. At the sixth Miss Smith found a bunker, but recovered too strongly. Miss Hudson took 5 and was 1 up. Neither played a good second at the seventh, but they halved it in 4’s. Miss Hudson had bad luck when a good approach at the eighth kicked right across the green into a bunker. She came out too strongly, but Miss Smith was weak with her approach and strong with her chip, so that Miss Hudson had a chance to sink an eight-footer for a 5 and a win, a chance which :he took. Miss Smith got one back at the ninth, which she played in a sound 4. Miss Hudson seesawed across the green and took 6. The Christchurch player therefore turned 1 up, being out in 43 to Miss Smith’s 44.

BUNKER EXPERIENCE An 18-foot putt by Miss Smith and a six-footer by Miss Hudson halved the tenth in 3’s, but Miss Hudson was 2 up again after Tipperary, where Miss Smith caught another bunker. Miss Hudson, too, was off the line with her approach, but was down in 6 to 7. Miss Smith was getting plenty of bunker experience and, with water lying on the sodden sand, they were not pleasant bunkers. She caught another at the twelfth, and when Miss Hudson laid her chip stone dead she lost the hole in 5 to 4. Miss Hudson was playing very accurate golf now and Miss Smith was still out of touch. An easy putt for a win in 4 to 5 left the Canterbury champion 4 up after the thirteenth, but she missed a four-foot putt for a 3 and a half at the fourteenth, where Miss Smith played an accurate chip. The match ended at the fifteenth, where Miss Hudson ran her ball out of a bunker and was down in 5. Miss Smith’s approach was very short and then she missed a two-footer for the half to keep the game alive. Miss Hudson on the day thoroughly deserved such a margin. It was not Miss Smith’s true form. The day’s results were as follows:— SEMI-FINALS Miss Zoe Hudson (Canterbury) beat Miss K. Shand (Otago), 3 and 1. Miss Claire Smith (Invercargill) beat Mrs H. Dodgshun (Otago) by default. FINAL Miss Hudson beat Miss Smith, 4 and
