HANLON’S CUP CHANCE
WAIMATE MEETING TODAY PETERSHAM IS SPRINT SELECTION (Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. The annual race meeting of the Waimate Racing Club will be held at Waimate tomorrow. The track is likely to be holding. The principal event, the Waimate Cup, has drawn a high-class field, including recent winners over the distance in swordstick, Night Dress and Cape Gabo, while Knight Commander, Hanlon, Balmenter, Studley Royal, Cherokee and Vanity Queen have been racing prominently. The changed going will no doubt upset calculations based on earlier form and on his Oamaru performance on a holding track, Balmenter will no doubt attract attention. Hanlon and Cape Gabo are both likely under the conditions, while Cheroke and Vanity Queen will be dangerous under their light weights. The open sprint, the President’s Handicap, has also a strong field including Rebel Mate, who is being asked to concede no less than 211 b to the next on the list, Top Row, who has not won a .race for a long time. Petersham is partial to a soft track and his win at Oamaru was impressive. HORSES IN FORM The single pool will be in use and the following horses are likely to be well supported:— STUDHOLME HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP.—Lord Puck and Cymric. TRIAL PLATE—Johnemby and Homing.
