QUEEN CARNIVAL TO BE HELD

Opening At Winter Show CITY’S BIG PATRIOTIC EFFORT This year, in conjunction with the Southland Agricultural and Pastrol Association’s winter show, the Invercargill Metropolitan Patriotic Committee has decided to launch a Queen Carnival. Three princesses have now been chosen and voting tickets in support of each will be available on Monday, the price being sixpence each. The winter show and carnival will be held in the Drill Hall on May 9, 10, and 11. The city has been divided into three areas and support for each princess will come from the respective areas. The princesses are: Navy princess (colour, blue): Miss Phillipa Hodge; ladies-in-waiting: Miss Elsa Irwin and Miss Mary Nichol. Area: Avenal, Northend, South Invercargill B, East Invercargill. Army princess, (colour, red): Miss Helen Hargest; ladies-in-waiting: Miss Jennie Thomson and one to be chosen. Area: Central, North Invercargill, East Invercargill. Air Force princess, (colour, white): Miss Ethel Neame; ladies-in-waiting: Miss Jean Cockerill and Miss Irene Smith. Area: Gladstone, South Invercargill A, Waikiwi. APPEARANCE AT BALL The three princesses will make their first public appearance at the Patriotic Ball in the Country Club next Tuesday. Every section of the community can assist in some way to support the respective princesses. Tickets are available and the raising of funds in many other directions to support each princess is being arranged by the various women’s committees throughout Invercargill. The carnival in the Drill Hall in conjunction with the show will provide entertainment for all tastes, and the organizer (Mr P. Linton Hodge) states that variety stalls, side shows, competitions, community sings, and all other forms of entertainment will be provided for the public. The children will also be catered for and, altogether, the people of Invercargill will be provided with a special treat. Whatever is given in the way of cash or donations will go towards a very worthy object, the Patriotic Fund. A splendid donation in the form of a radio set has been given by Charles Begg and Company, Limited, and it is hoped many other business firms will provide similar gifts for competition during the carnival.
