PIG INDUSTRY IN DOMINION
MORE MONEY WANTED TO STIMULATE PRODUCTION (United Press Association) HAMILTON, April 19. “Unless the Government is prepared to put £lOO,OOO or £200,000 into the industry, I don’t think there is any chance of increasing the production,” said the Mayor of Hamilton (Mr H. D. Caro), chairman of the Waikato District Pig Council, at an executive meeting last night when the question of the Government providing cheap pig feed was under consideration. Mr Caro said cheap food alone would not increase production. Money was no object in war time as far as the production of troops was concerned, and as farm production was just as important, more money should be found to stimulate production in the same way as it was being found for the production of the army. Whereas Canada was able to increase pig production by more than 30 per cent., New Zealand’s pig production had decreased by 30 per cent. “There does not seem to be any argument about it,” continued Mr Caro. “The New Zealand producer is not doing his job.” Mr C. P. Carrington, district pig supervisor, said it appeared that pig raising was more or less a depression business. If butterfat dropped lOd per
lb tomorrow, they would have all the pig production required. He thought the present waste of whey in some instances at factories was a criminal offence.
